should put the whole name (canadian museum for human rights) in the title too...nobody outside winnipeg will know what CMHR is and will probably pass over this thread....the full name is more likely to pique people's interest

So, what's the word on estimated completion dates, or a timeframe for when we can actually see this project to be in full swing?

I read the interview with the architect, it seems that this is on a "fast track" for construction, but I'm not sure what that means exactly.

The construction schedule hasnt been made public yet, except that site preparation is happening now (it appears they are digging wells for geothermal heating) and the first pile is scheduled for april 1st....the completion date is set at 'spring 2012'

i guess 3 years is fast tracked for a building of this complexity.

Piling will start Apr 14, 2009. They will use two tower cranes to build the concrete structure or back end of the museum. That should be complete sometime in 2010 when the tower cranes will be removed and two very tall crawler cranes will be used for the steel and glass installation. Again Opening is slated for Apr 2012.

yeah, i don't quite know how that works either. I have seen the schematic and the two crawler heights don't seem high enough to reach the tip of the tower but I'm sure they have it figured out.

This is ugly! i liked both of these finalist designs. That building looks just too fat and has no flow with the city skyline.

I suppose what you find beautiful, I'd find an eye sore. No flow with the skyline? It's not supposed to flow with it. This museum is designed to stick out and offer contrast between it and its surroundings. If it was just another Winnipeg building, that would be tantamount to a design failure. This is arguably the most exciting building going up anywhere on the continent. What do you want, a modernist box? That would be a giant snooze!

Agreed.

When I first looked at the final design, I was like "wha...!?"

Then, over time, it grew on me, to a point where I love the design because it's nothing like anything else in this city, or the country, or the continent for that matter.

As regards to those "super tall" crawler cranes, I think this crane (or something like it) will show up in this city soon.

That crane is used to assemble 1 of 3 600 ft. lightning towers at Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center for NASA's next generation of launch vehicles, Ares I, which it will replace the Space Shuttle after it retires next year.

More photos here.

Cool. The tower cranes will show up this year and then be taken down and replaced by two of those tall boys in late 2010. Seems kind of backwards but i guess they can't erect the intricate steel frame with two tower cranes sticking out of it. They will be using a lot of temporary podiums and support scaffolding for the "Cloud" structure.

I had the same reaction at first, but grew to love it rather quickly. This museum has huge potential to raise the visibility of Winnipeg around the world, and bring in tourists. I'll certainly be making a trip just to see it in person. In the mean time, it's going to be fun watching this take shape.

This design has always been my favourite so naturally I was overjoyed to see it beat out the competition. I'm really not a fan of the square box style of architecture although there are ways to make those buildings somewhat appealing too.
