I think Philly is one other one, but yeah, there aren't many. Before the Frost Bank Tower was built this would have been our tallest. That kind of height would have been thought of as being destined for Congress Avenue, our main street, not some quiet street on the edge of downtown.

By the way, something that strikes me about Rainey Street is how everyone freaks out about how narrow the street is. And it is a narrow street, but it's not unprecedented for an American city, not even for a Texan city. San Antonio, for example, has plenty of very narrow streets in their downtown that are lined with high rises. And some of those are having to bear the brunt of the hustle and bustle of hotel visitors coming and going.

We are going by a definition of a single river where the skyline bends along it right?

I asked a friend about it and he said Pittsburg, Portland, San Diego.

Well, it doesn't have to be along a river, it's just hard not to notice the surrounding effect that is coming together. Particularly if you were standing on the southish end of the Congress Ave bridge.

I spend a lot of time in San Diego. It doesn't have a river in the downtown area. The shoreline along the bay is curved I suppose, but it doesn't have a skyline that looks it. It's skyline isn't really butting up to the shore.

Portland is on a river, but I'm not sure it bends much along downtown. I don't recall a view in which it's skyline looks like what is developing in Austin anyway.

I've never been to Pittsburgh or Philly though.

Pulled this pic from a 2014 article about Portland's development patterns. The orange buildings are projected growth patterns, not actual structures.

They definitely anticipate a second downtown cluster happening across the river, as well as a skyline that starts to follow the river bends more closely. Kind of interesting to see they have similar concerns/dynamics.

From what I understand, Austin officials have frequently looked at Portland as a templet for Austin's growth so it's not suprising that there are similarities. I really like how they have created a ring, I'm assuming that green line is rail?.

Good question -- I didn't get that far in the article to know. May just be a greenbelt/bike trail. But they DO seem to like their rail quite a bit, don't they?

Smart folks, those Portlanders.

Ya know...the views from the rooftop of the Skyhouse aren't too shabby either. Love the string light, sitting area. Plus they'll have a nice view of 70 Rainey which I predict will be the best looking of the towers in that area. I like the pic. Austin looks pretty awesome near dusk.

New Orleans bends a bit in the vicinity of downtown. Nice skyline view from across the river at any rate or from the downtown bridge. San Diego is on the water, but downtown is best viewed from the airport actually, especially when coming in for a dramatic landing there. Pittsburgh's downtown has a bit of a Manhattan like appearance from the river because the tall buildings are built at the confluence of two rivers (Allegheny/Monongahela) that join there to become the Ohio River. The best views are from across either of these rivers, but the view from the bluffs of the Monongahela are truly spectacular. Most of the other river cities that come to mind are built on fairly high bluffs (Memphis, Kansas City, Mpls., etc.), so the skyline views are compromised viewed from the water. Nashville, Louisville, and Cincinnati all look pretty neat from the river. Cincinnati has the best curve. St. Louis is very disappointing from the river. Austin's downtown development and curved river front is somewhat singular.

Someone who lives in the Shore took a photo of the food trailer park on Rainey because it looks like it is being cleared out. This would of course be for Sackman's 78-84 Rainey mixed use project. Maybe somebody hanging out on Rainey this weekend can confirm it.

That has to be the best 70 Rainey update ever.

Yeah, it's finally starting to look like something. And we're getting an idea of what the tower's shift in angle will look like.
