Just as an example, this is the station box for the Vancouver City Centre station for the Canada Line Skytrain (subway). This pit looks no different from the hundred other construction sites in the city, except of course for the giant subway tunnel running through it.

I would imagine the wood beams could be reused, which is certainly better for the environment than using so much shotcrete and rebar.

We do have the shotcrete projects in a few areas. But it does seem that the wood use is higher here. I would like to know the answer as well. The Escala dig is very impressive.

5th and Madison tile project is much better now that it covers the whole side. So its not going to be different sections of color. This is much better with the solid side of tiles.....Not Bad!

hmm... when i left Seattle on Sunday morning I drove by O8 and the Olivian
The Olivian was just a bit under street level and Olive 8 was in about the third floor..
When i got back to Seattle this morning i also drove by O8 and Olivian
the Olivian is at about street level and more has been added to the cores----the O8 is still at the third floor!!!
also have any new cranes been put up cause from I-90 i saw 1 or 2 new cranes

ugh!!!! i was gonna post a picture of that dark brown building in the "Whats your cities ugliest building?" thread but i never got around to it
still that building is hideous!!!

i passed by third ave. in Pioneer square and i noticed that some of the buildings have thin, old windows, dirty, and worn out.
its not supposed to be like this..
these are some of the best looking buildings in Seattle and instead of being cheap apartaments they should be some of the most expensive condos in the city. Pioneer square needs a make over--HUGE one. i think some of the buildings should be turned into condos, and hotels.

The brown building, called "prisonlike" by its former owner, is slated to come down for a highrise. No idea on timing.

Pioneer Square has a key role providing low cost housing, including artists lofts. And it certainly won't go upscale en masse as long as it's a bars and homeless district. That said, parts of it have been gentrifying with renovations. A new office building is starting right now just south of King on First. Major proposals are in the works next to Occidental Park (office/residential midrise with streetcar barn) and in the north half of the stadium parking lot (up to 900 housing units). The 900 units in particular would change the dynamic. The projected start is late 2008 I believe.

The hole at Third & Cherry is a City property where they demolished the Public Safety Building. They had a competition with the requirement being a tower on 1/3 of the site and public space on 2/3. The winner was Triad Development with an architectural team of Norman Foster and GGLO. They plan a mix of office, housing, and retail with a major public plaza. Possibly a 2008 start.
