darn you cosmos! i was gonna post this! but i am in loveeee with the velodrome! such a sexy building, the quality is like nothing i've ever seen, it's just love at first sight!

The only thing I'm not convinced about on the velodrome is the ceiling - it feels a bit bland & value engineered compared to the rest of the space - I can't help thinking they could have done something more interesting, more like the Vancouver speed skating rink, which looked amazing.

There's the London Stadium development thread, which is full of construction photos, and isn't dedicated solely to the Olympic venues, so it's nice to have a new thread just for London 2012.
For those who don't know, London's Games is split between a large new Olympic Park in East London - most of whose venues should be completed this year - and well known venues across London like Wembley and Wimbldeon. There are also events outside of the capitial, like the football tournament which is nationwide, and the sailing events which will be on the south coast.

London is doing a great job!! They are doing a good job. Fixing the tube to avoid any problems as overcrowded tube stations, new buildings etc. All these is given oppurtunity to people to work which is even better. I can't wait for the Olympic games is going to be one of the best event ever!
Construction completed at the London Olympic Stadium
Today marked the end of construction on London’s most avidly-awaited structure over the last three years – the Olympic Stadium for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Designed by Populous, the ‘centre piece’ of the Stratford site is an ellipse, measuring 315m at its longest axis and 256m at its shortest axis. The final step will be to lay the running track, put off to ensure its protection during the programme of temporary overlay work for ceremonies.
Construction on the project commenced in May 2008 and now, less than three years later, the Olympic Stadium has been completed on time, under budget and touting an exemplary safety record. A ceremonial laying of the last strip of turf was attended by Chairman of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and Olympian Frank Fredericks, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman John Armitt, London 2012 Chair Sebastian Coe and 400m hurdles Olympic medallist Tasha Danvers. Local schoolchildren also turned out to watch the completion of this important project.
Wow, so the main Olympic stadium is all finished now. I'm wondering how the Olympic cauldron will be integrated into the design of the stadium, or if it'll be a free-standing structure.

Completed Olympic Arena Makes Case for Temporary

Temporary architecture usually incorporates some combination of mobility, lightness, and minimal mass (or even, in the age of Pritzker/ Serpentine Gallery/world expo revivals, extravagant pavilions).
A basketball arena tag-team designed by Sinclair Knight Merz together with Wilkinson Eyre and KSS has just been completed, and was one of the fastest structures to be built for the games, ready an entire year in advance. Work began in October 2009, with the 1,000-ton steel frame being completed in March of last year; the all-white cladding was installed soon after, with the interior finally furbished over the past couple of months. The stadium as such will have its fifteen minutes next summer, then be deconstructed and shipped elsewhere for use.
