I agree, it looks like the combination of a Las Vegas casino, a Mosque, and the London Clock Tower. Who are the architects designing this thing? Get SOM over there fast and let them finish the top half!

Love the street scenes - at ground level it displays a whole new aspect.

Up close this building doesnt look all that terrible like it does from far away. I like the details on it and some of those street scenes are like from another world or something. Do you have to be Muslim to visit the city? Do you have to some religious pass or whatever? I am sure an atheist like myself would be killed on site, lol.

Hey thanks everyone! I'll try to get a photography permit from the municipality and then take some proper pictures. It'll take some time though because from now until the end of hajj (December) Makkah's going to be pretty packed.

What makes you say the street scenes look like they're from another world? And yes you have to be Muslim to visit the city. Makkah and Madinah are Muslim bases, they're like our HQ, only members allowed. Every country has it's own Visa rules; the states for example requires you have all sorts of stuff only well off people have before they give you a visa. The requirement for the Makkah and Madinah visa is that you be Muslim.

Well that hardly seems fair but whatever. It looks like its from a different world or maybe the far off future because everyone is so used to seeing western cities and this looks so unorthodox compared to a western city. It looks great though and I guess it just looks different because everyone is walking around in a large city with traditional religious garb on which you never see anywhere else really.

And to get a visa couldnt you just lie and say you were muslim. I mean how would they really know? Do they test you on your knowledge of Islam or something? I mean really, it seems that anyone could say they were a part of Islam even though they really arent; how do you prove it? I could say that I believe in anything but nobody could prove that I dont really believe in it.

If a person says he's Muslim, no one is allowed to question it or quiz him or claim that he's not. Unless of course he does or says stuff that conclusively proves he's not Muslim, saying something like Jesus is the son of God would be one example.

I think it is beautiful and classic architecture that hopefully will one day be celebrated and appreciated without religious meaning. I can't support you in saying it is ugly.

Yasir, thanks for the great shots. It looks far better at street level...I would have thought otherwise without those shots.

Phenomenal structure. It also looks to have some interesting detail and high quality materials, with sort of a blend of the simple and austere traditions endemic to the area and surprising elegance, considering the sheer mass. It's much less faux than I anticipated.

When completed, it'll certainly be one of the most fantastic structures man has built to date...In general such "most awesome structures in the world" don't have such a restriction when it comes to those wanting to see it in person. Only Muslims will see it in person--and while seeing other fantastic buildings of the world requires travel, visa, passport...the only Muslims(while a pretty large club), is uniquely restrictive. Other fantastic buildings of the world are cataloged far more extensively by architucture buffs, throughout the construction. This building remains a mystery, because of the limited access to the city. Perhaps the day will come when the mindset will change to "people who respect Muslims and Islam", can visit these cities.

Yasir: Thanks for the excellent pics! As you may have noticed, we're starved for pics and info, here. If it's not too much trouble, a little additional commentary would be appreciated. It's still unclear to me what the final design choice is on the central tower--clock or no? It appears from the one pic of yours' that they are finally working on that part of the structure. Good luck on the photo pass. If I'm not mistaken, that must be a rare rainy day.

Thanks MolsonExpert and Leftopolis. About the clock, I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if they did include it in the final plans. There are a lot of clocks in Makkah, on top of hotels, in small towers in the courtyard of the Mosque, hanging from the ceilings in front of the entrances and suspended at many locations inside the mosque. From the area around the Kaa'ba though there are only one or two visible, one is installed on the front facade of a hotel some distance away and not particularly easy to see. I'll try to find someone who can get me access to the plans but it'll probably take quite some time.
