^ It's nothing.

I still say this tower would have been better with the spire.

Some old renders...

Agreed, but are we 100% sure it won't be there? While it would be extra cost logically Gary would want the tallest building officially.

Barnet cares about sales. Besides, we don't know what else he has on the boards.

The spire would have been real bad because it would have maybe been taller than 1776 feet which is blasphemous because freedom. Also, life is precious and god and the bible and other stuff.

Believe me when I tell you that very few people anywhere--never mind in this particular forum--really get all bent out of shape over things like that.

But yeah...Somehow I get the feeling that we're in for a bit of a surprise come when the upper floors approach completion.

I disagree - even a small 100 or 150 foot spire would have made it more appealing. After all, the Vanderbuilt has a small 100 foot spire. I think it came to making more of a profit on a condo building.

Even if it there was a spire that pushed it to 1,775 ft, there's an easy solution to make it the tallest if it was indeed the case. All one has to do is climb the tower during a lightning storm that is windy. Make sure the sacrificial person is at least 3 ft tall. The "spire" martyr would than get struck by lightning, become a cindered and burned carbon corpse. Now... the reason why it has to be windy is so the cindered carbon corpse dries quickly, fusing the legs to the top of the spire. And there you have it, a perfectly applicable CTBUH architectural element that classifies as a spire extension, and pushes this to the first spot.

Why are they still peddling that 131 floors number? Does inflating the floor count really make a building more attractive to potential customers? Why did they choose the number 131 anyway?

Just curious.

This is about as ungraceful of a supertall design as I've ever seen. So god damn clunky looking

^ The original design was really graceful. It's kind of a shame it got value engineered into this. I wish I had never seen the earlier design so I couldn't compare the two...

We can get a bit despairing around here, lol.
It's objectively a perfectly nice tower. Strange massing (with the cantilever especially) but the facade looks high quality and the detailing is fine.
Maybe we've gotten a bit spoiled with all the other really amazing work going on.
I know in 2008 everyone would be going insane over this tower - there would be double the amount of comments in this thread.

That all being said.... I pray they build the spire. But we will see.

Either this gets the spire (at least 250' to finally put down WTC-1's sham spire) or Barnett builds something taller in NYC. Anything less is unacceptable.

This thing will be stunning at 1550 ft, even without a spire.

And CPT has some cladding going on too
