Also the civic centre in moose jaw (now torn down)

The Richmond Oval is actually the one that started the ceiling debate. How often is the ceiling in the line of sight of the product? For example, How many trapeze shows take place in these arenas?

Hey! I saw a young Tie Domi play in that rink!

is it that bad? center hung score board. individual seating? With a modern refresh that could actually be a decent home for an AHL/whl team

I do love how they kept the exterior intact, and managed to build a top floor with a rink. It looks very cozy and intimate.

One of the reasons I'm not a fan of arena interiors is due to the ceiling. With a few exceptions, NBA/NHL ceilings are just full of ugly steel.

Can't seem to find it, but an interior render of one of the Ottawa arena proposals has an awesome ceiling. That's what I would love to see. Gives the venue a more intimate look and should improve sound greatly for concerts. Almost gives it a concert hall feel/look.

It looks more like a Junior A rink than an AHL arena.

These days AHL rinks tend to be scaled down NHL rinks with similar amenities, including premium seating.

I was finishing school there when it was being built and never got to see the inside. I haven't kept up, why was it torn down? It was only built around '81.

Exactly, who cares what the roof looks like, when you are in one of these buildings, there is something happening on the ice / floor / stage that people look at and that's what arenas are designed around. The roof structure is always painted dark colours to fade into the background, it shouldn't be a focal point. The roof in the Olympic Oval here is interesting too, but it's a space that is long, wide and not very tall, so the entire inside of the space is visible most of the time, so in that case it makes sense to make it nice.

On the roof/ceiling topic, the qPlex in Saint John has a decent ceiling for a rink built in the 21st century:

It's on the small side and I don't see private boxes. Otherwise, it doesn't look bad.

It is a Junior A rink. The capacity was about 2000 (give or take) and it was nightmarish to get to and from the arena as it is located in the heart of a 1980's vintage residential subdivision. [update - according to Wikipedia, the capacity is 3700 - I am genuinely shocked by that]

Both the AHL Saints (now Marlies) and OHL Royals (now Sting) moved on to better places. Newmarket was not a good home for those leagues.

That said, I saw a number of AHL games in that arena over the 5 years or so the team was there. Can't beat how close you were to the action.

It looks somewhat comparable to the Selkirk Recreation Centre a half hour north of Winnipeg (a junior A rink), and this venue is listed as having 2,751 seats.

(Fun fact: The Selkirk Rec Centre is effectively Winnipeg's secondary arena as it's the only rink with more than 1,500 seats anywhere in the capital region other than the MTS Centre)

Laval amazes me. It's like an NCAA school in Canada with the facilities they have the way the football team in the CIS draws a crowd. I've heard it's like a major event!

I imagine it would be different if they had a CFL team.

[QUOTE=Oilkountry;7964750]Richmond oval comes to mind

All the wood for the Richmond Oval ceiling was grown and harvested in Castlegar.

^^^ hmm don't think so? Pine beetle damaged wood has a discoloured look to it and the premier at the time came to the saw mill in Castlegar to give them a high five for their work.
