I have often fantasized about some quirky indie movie being filmed in and being set in Edmonton.

Just thought 'd share.

I don't mind Edmonton not being a big filming location, it makes it a bit more special when stuff does get filmed here. I wouldn't mind if it happened just a little more often, though, I guess.

I'd love to see some cost benefit analysis that compared corporate handouts to various industries. Something tells me the movie industry is a black hole.

I suspect the Alberta and Canadian film industries wouldn't be such black holes if it could compete on a level playing field with Hollywood. Unfortunately it can't for several reasons: 1-Theatrical duopoly for 90% of screens in Canada, 2-American P&A (Prints and Advertising) budgets being larger than most Canadian production budgets.

If we had access to our own screens and were given decent release campaigns, most of our films would probably do well financially like a few of these breakout hits E.g. Passchendale, Men with Brooms, Mambo Italiano, Bon Cop, Bad Cop...

As a connoisseur of campy teenage sex comedies, I believe you mean "Meatballs".

No, he meant Porky's. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Although it was written and directed by an American and was filmed in Miami, Florida, Porky's was funded by a Canadian production company, which means that it is classified as a Canadian film. Porky's is the highest-grossing Canadian film of all time in domestic box office

Interesting. Both Porkys and Meatballs are Canadian. We are a high art/cinema powerhouse!

We've yet to produce a domestic film that has really done well internationally, especially in the U.S. Porky's and the Care Bears Movie are about the only two that I can think of... Others were surprise hits in places like Hong Kong or France (Cube and Ginger Snaps, for example) but not in the U.S...

I think part of the problem is that we have Canadian stars who can open a movie in the U.S. but don't want to work for pennies on the dollar back here, and then we have Canadian actors, writers, directors who want to focus on Canadian stories that don't really translate to foreign audiences... I think the key to having a breakout domestic production is balancing casting with storytelling...

Ironically what would help build Canadian talent into global names would be to have a Canadian made soap opera that aired in the UK, Australia and the US. That's how most of Australian talent got their start and built a following outside their homeland... Neighbours for example spawned Kylie Minogue, Hugo Weaving and a bunch more other names...
