Landslide-hit N.L. town gets move-out order
One-third of community ruled uninhabitable, residents told

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has condemned an additional 23 properties in Daniel's Harbour, a community that has been plagued by landslides for years.

Residents of the small town on the Northern Peninsula were given the news by provincial officials Monday evening.

Mayor Ross Humber said he and others in Daniel's Harbour were told that the properties have been condemned for safety reasons because it's only a matter of time before there is another landslide.

Resort assets sold?; Deal to sell Humber Valley Resort assets could be reached by Dec. 18

An agreement has been reached to possibly sell the assets of Humber Valley Resort to a third party.

George Kinsman of the firm Ernst and Young, which was appointed trustee of the resort’s assets after it went bankrupt last December, confirmed via email late Tuesday afternoon that an “agreement has been executed which will see the resort assets sold to a third party purchaser.”

The agreement, which is subject to certain conditions, is scheduled to close on or before Dec. 18.

Ernst and Young approved the sale of some of the resort’s assets last March, including the Beach House building, which had contained a restaurant, three building lots and neighbouring Strawberry Hill Resort.

The other major assets retained by Ernst and Young included the golf course, clubhouse, administrative buildings, the bridge crossing the Humber River, roads and underground infrastructure. Most of the resort’s chalets, including more than 200 finished chalets and several dozen unfinished ones, are already privately owned.

As of press time Tuesday, there were no further details of the latest agreement reached, including who the deal was reached with and how much the selling price is.

A group of chalet owners had made an unsuccessful bid for the assets previously, as had another group led by Brian Dobbin, who founded the resort.

They have to have URLS - If they are on your harddrive, you have to upload them to an image hosting server - Imageshack is the best since it's free (Flickr is popular and free too). Just follow the directions, copy the url provided after you upload for pics or thumbnails, and paste it in. (Thats just basic instructions, each site is a little different, but it's actually easy when you get used to it.) You might find another hosting site which works just as well.

Basically you have to paste the URL (Including the file extension, such as .jpg), with [img] in front of it and [/img] after it with no spaces, and make sure the IMG tages are not already duplicated, as in the case with Imageshack where they can include the IMG tags for you.

Grenfell’s main entrance now a construction zone

Construction of the extension to Sir Wilfred Grenfell College’s arts and sciences building begins today.

The college’s main parking lot in front of the building has already been off-limits this semester as it was torn up to make way for the extension.

As of today, the main entrance to the college will be the pool/gymnasium entrance located at the rear of the arts and sciences building. A pair of temporary entrances on the second and third floors will be constructed within the next couple of weeks on the wing of the building facing the library.

Those two entrances will be removed once construction is complete.

Flow of pedestrian traffic within the school should remain as is, with the exception of having access to either the main entrance or the entrance near the college’s book store.

With the parking lot and main entrance area now a construction zone, permit parking has been moved to the lot located in front of the fine arts building. The rear parking lot is still accessible and lots at the nearby RecPlex building and Pepsi Centre are expected to see more traffic.

“There will be some minor inconvenience for maybe the first few days, until people get used to where they have to go, but we don’t anticipate any major inconvenience,” said Javis Hulan, the college’s general services supervisor. “We will be posting signage at various intersections of University Drive and Grenfell Avenue to provide direction.”

The extension project is expected to be completed by March 2011.

It's nice to know there is some activity going on in Corner Brook, as well as other parts outside St. John's. St. John's is the attention hog here.

Corner Brook Projects going on..
-long term care facility-almost complete just minor details inside
-city hall project-foundation and elevator shaft are up concrete columns have been placed and steel is going up.
-Court house-most of the exteriour work is done, landscraping is mostly done it is all closed up and interiour work is being done.
-SWGC expansion-the new parking lots are done, site prep is being done now
-Bypass road from wheelers to grenfell dr-seems like it is wraped up for the winter the layout is basically done alot of development to be goin on there in the next couple of years

I forgot that in Flickr, you have to right click on the pic to get the correct url.

Right click on the photo and select "properties" in Flickr to get the url, which includes the .jpg extension - this is it for one of the pics:

Trans-Labrador Highway now connected

Transportation Minister Tom Hedderson made the announcement of the highway connection between Cartwright and Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Tuesday in the legislature.

"We indicated that we'd do everything possible to get it done in this time period of 2009," Hedderson said, "and ... we are very, very close in a sense that the crew has indeed connected up both sides."

The final section is not yet ready for vehicle traffic.

Hedderson said some final work has to be done on that portion of the highway, but he said it would open to the public soon.

Government announces future direction for Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

Oddly, the name choice makes it sound less independent than it did before, but the association with a more well known name is probably good too.
