I don't want density just for density's sake if the result is just a bunch of chain stores.

"New Orleans back on list of top 50 most populous U.S. cities"

http://www.nola.com/politics/index.s...t_river_mobile

Always nice to see some movement up this list. So many places rank the top 50 cities, so this is a nice change.

Another nice plug:

New York Ranks No. 1 and Increases Lead Over San Francisco; Revitalization is Pushing Detroit and New Orleans Up the Ranks

Quote:
New Orleans has changed, too, as the city continues to reinvent itself following Hurricane Katrina. The city is rebuilding with walkability in mind as it develops affordable housing and revitalizes commercial districts, which may have helped the city’s Walk Score increase from 55.6 in 2011 to 56.3 today.

The proposed work for this permit includes adjustments to the exterior of the building only. The following four improvements were omitted from our original permit submission (permit # 14-18019) so that review and approval of exterior improvements could be considered by HDLC, SHPO, SFM, and NPS. These four improvements are now included: new exterior lighting, new blade sign at the original blade sign location, new exterior ductwork strapped to the building at the north side, and re-cladding of the existing canopy structure. All of the aforementioned items have received conceptual approval from the HDLC, and this package seeks to finalize those details, obtain a certificate of appropriateness from the HDLC and then proceed to the Department of Safety and Permits for plan review.

Mayor Issues Executive Order Affirming Discrimination Will Not Be Tolerated in New Orleans

This may not seem development related but it is. Many conventions etc would have canceled here if we didn't have this, so its good to see the Mayor reiterate that Nola is open to everyone. Its unfortunate we have such a horrible governor but this will mitigate the damage for at least Nola.

As for convention center development. I agree that its quite attractive and while most of the buildings are just placeholders for a future design the overall scale is great. A streetcar(even something more modern than our normal streetcar) I think could really work here. I do wonder how they plan to negotiate with Tulane though for the waterfront property. We know Tulane is building some water research facility right now. With Jaeger owning or about to own the Power Plant they certainly have a leg up in negotiations. If anything they would just make it much easier to create a seemless experience from WTC/ Harrahs all the way to Jackson Avenue.
I think Tulane's riverfront campus is included in the plans. That "cultural campus" for research they have on the map? At any rate, they know what's going on with that development, because Berger is the chair of Tulane's Board.

Gretna mall expands with H&M store

Quote:
Oakwood Center in Gretna aims to continue its post-Hurricane Katrina rebound as it opened a 22,000-square-foot H&M today.

The fashion chain has two other Louisiana locations, one in Shreveport and another at the Outlet Collection in the French Quarter.

Exciting new redevelopment of the former Woolworth/Super 10 building on Oak Street. Downstairs will be configured for retail or restaurant, upstairs for attractive office. Great opportunity for anyone looking for high-quality space in a bustling Uptown corridor.

The news about H&M is great news for Oakwood, seems that they are really attracting quality retail. OTOH it seems that the announcement by the Esplanade further indicates their continual slide. A discount school uniform chain and a local mom and pop makeup store are not impressive at all and far from even mid level retail. Both remind me of the kind of businesses that were prominent in the waining days of The Plaza.

Interior mall spaces are tough and not desirable. Attracting midrange tenants that have both interior mall access and exterior mall access is really to only way to go. The suburban mall model is of course all but dead. Lifetstyle center type renovations are really all these malls can do. I had heard about H&M going to Esplanade too. Since the Oakwood rumor turned out to be true I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen.

This is where the proposed Virgin Hotel is rumored to be going.

This hotel combined with the Ace Hotel, Moxie Hotel, hotel on the corner of Julia/Baronne, Joie De Vivre, ALoft and some other I think shows where the hip hotel chains are interested in locating. Also a permit for exploratory demolition was applied for the Oil and Gas Building. Look for something to be announced there shortly.

I'm all for any new development, but it's interesting that it would be tucked away behind the Drury Inn and the AT&T buildings. On the plus side, it would be across from the Civic, which is a similar demographic. I guess I expected it to go on Poydras or somewhere more prominent. My dream location for this would be on Canal and Tchoupitoulas where Motwanti has been trying unsuccessfully to build a hotel.

On another note, the late civil rights leader Avery Alexander's statue formerly in the old LA Supreme Court building, has been cleaned and moved to the entry plaza of the new LSU hospital. http://compomat.com/walnut-shell-bla...xander-statue/ For those who don't remember, the old charity building was named in his honor. I also learned the entrance inside the hospital will have a Chihuly chandelier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Chihuly. Interesting touch.

Last, here's an article I've come to agree with. The fancy-Waffle House is too tacky. I'd prefer a regular Waffle House with nice quality construction materials, instead of something faux-New Orleans. Build modern and let the actual historic buildings stand out. http://www.citylab.com/design/2015/0...-house/394097/

^ I love that location, actually. With the Civic, Ace, Cellar Door, etc. they can put in a hip little enclave of boutique hotels and restaurants that's a little separated from the Poydras/Superdome scene and definitely separated from the Canal St/Bourbon shitshow. Hopefully this can start to fill all the empty storefronts and blank walls along Baronne.

As a plus, they can liven up that narrow little stretch of Lafayette St - always a hidden little gem in that area that seemed a little forlorn.

I have no problem with that location for the Virgin Hotel. With South Market finally opening up nearby, I think that area will be even more trendy than it already is in a short while.

The allowed height there is 125 feet too so its not that small with a rear alleyway that's near the property too. Just as a reference the two buildings by it are 5 floors. So a building double that size would be pretty noticeable.
