Published on May 17, 2013

SYDNEY — Thanks to changes in Sydney harbour caused by the $37-million dredging project, the Canadian Coast Guard has had to review navigation aids to meet the existing needs of local mariners.

During Sydney Harbour Ports Day recently, Barry Nisbet of the navigational review office of the Canadian Coast Guard outlined changes local mariners can expect.

CBRM Holds In-Camera Meeting On Port
May 15, 2013 • Local News / No comments

Cape Breton Regional Council held an in-camera meeting on port development yesterday. The CBRM is searching for parties who may be interested in setting up shop on its recently purchased Greenfield site in Sydport, as well as at other locations adjacent to Sydney Harbour. Yesterday’s meeting came after Mayor Cecil Clarke’s recent trip to Galveston, Texas, where spoke with parties who are interested in commercial opportunities associated with Sydney Harbour. While much of the meeting dealt with confidential commercial matters, Clarke says that good progress is being made in efforts to promote the port to prospective developers. He adds he’ll be providing more details on the matter to council in the coming days.

Developers looking to get started on $50-million subdivision

Published on May 20, 2013

By Nancy King - Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — Work on a major new residential subdivision in Sydney could begin within a few weeks.

...

The partners, Sydney contractor Joneljim Construction and Halifax-based home builder Picket Fence Homes, announced last year plans to build 350 housing units over a 10-year period, ranging from seniors apartments and single-level townhouses to semi-detached and single-family homes.

The project will also include the development of walking and biking trails, a boardwalk and recreation fields while maintaining the surrounding wetlands.

The development will proceed in five two-year stages. The first phase is expected to cost about $5 million to construct. Over 10 years, it is estimated to be a $50-million project.

...

The intention is to use green technologies in the construction, including wood pellet stoves, geothermal heating and solar energy in the homes.

...

Eight apartment buildings with eight units each, the two 16-unit senior apartment buildings and one 40-unit multi-level seniors complex are expected to cost the developers $14 million. The cost to build single family homes was priced at $21 million.

At a height of approximately 140 metres, the next-generation wind turbines to be built on Boularderie Island will stand as tall as a 40-storey office building. The closest home will be just over one kilometre away.
