They have a public relations problem after their first weekend in business.

This registers less than zero on my give-a-damn scale.

Not a shot at you, ATX.

This is just as stupid, bigoted, and ridiculous as the incident a while back on Rainey with the swastika arranged drinks. They hired a latin influenced DJ group is play at their soft opening and then insulted them for utilizing the culture that they have always influenced? If they didn't want latin inspired sounds, then don't hire the group in the first place. It should inspire nothing less than an outrage from all of us, but then again I expected you to not care.

Aloft is DOA. The "management" offers zero explanation and the fake GM who told them to stop seems to be enjoying the whole thing in a sociopathic way. Sad!

The linked instagram vid actually shows the DJs talking with who I assume is the GM, and they're having a respectful conversation and talking calmly with him about what happened. For his part, the GM seems a little paranoid about the cell phone recording but also doesn't sound unreasonable or like he's not listening.

I think to their credit the Aloft has been pretty responsive to the PR issues, hasn't pushed back at all or blamed the DJs, and offered several times to make it right in different ways. At the least it's pretty clear they understand the ramifications of this, and recognize it as a problem to solve quickly.

I'm not saying what happened isn't tone deaf, or insulting, but I'd also say it's several orders of magnitude away from anything involving a swastika.

So is everyone supposed to take her word as gospel?

For the record, I didn't watch the video.

No shade, but I think we're past that--It's obvious their restaurant GM made a BIG mistake. I will give them credit for listening, but this just seems weird and messy on Aloft's part.

Have they made an official statement? I'd really like to check out the space sometime.

Back in the 70s, my band was asked to stop playing earlier than planned a few times, but mostly it was because we sucked.

This incident is a pretty far cry from anything involving a swastika. But then again I expected you to get overly offended and blow it out of proportion.

I disagree. They're both instances of ethnocentrism / racism. One of them is anti-Jewish, the other is anti-Hispanic.

Well I suppose the difference here is that there isn't really a way to say "no, the swastika doesn't mean anything offensive."

Here, we don't really know the full story, and we don't know what exactly happen. It's basically a he said/she said type thing. I mean, maybe the manager did shut the show down because he didn't want latin music, but that seems odd to me if he did. How would they have not known what type of music they booked?

The other thing was also a he said/she said type of situation.
