All the leaders and the press are saying "leadership is needed."

But where are the leaders?

well said, Majin...it's no secert while this city has grown leaps and bounds, but our cultural ammenities are still far behind

Sacramento is still a medium to largeish size city trapped in a small towns mentality. This city has a hard time investing and completing large city ammenites that other cites get done.

"But where are the leaders?"
That's the 400 million dollar question...

While, I agree in regards to constructing cultural and entertainment facilities (everyone here knows that's my mantra), I don't think we accomplish that by trading sprawl for an arena.

I know certain forum members frequently complain about both sprawl and the lack of a decent DT? So I find it curious that people are willing to allow Tsakopoulis to build an Arena in exchange for opening up more land to development, outisde the urban services boundaries.

Do you want to invest in your DT or do you want to open up more land on the periphery of our region for yet more sprawl????

This city (like others) can construct first class entertainment and cultural venues, (with creative financing) With nearly a billion in DT redevelopment funds as well as rental car and hospitality taxes sold by our leaders, it can happen.

Leadership, Leadership Leadership.......

We need somebody to step forward and lead on this issue. However, this is one area, where recent history isn't on our side. I don't expect anyone to step forward. I expect the Kings will relocate and then everyone (our leaders as well as everyone in greater Sacramento) will be standing around with dazed looks asking how this could have happened.

We also need a change in attitudes for people in this region. There seems to be a serious lacking of desire for urban amenities. People are perfectly content without an urban center for culutre, entertainment or transportation. They're content without a decent DT, though many are clamoring for highrise living, so maybe that will start to change things.

We wont see the investment needed DT, if we continue to allow sprawl.

We can save the Kings and build an Arena without contributing to yet more sprawl. (or can we?)

Here's one reply I've received from a Sacramento councilmember. Looks like I'll be sending out more emails.......
------------------------
(Los_Lobo),

Thank you for writing. It would be nice if some of the other regional entities (like
Roseville, private businesses) stepped up to the plate with the City of Sacramento.

Our taxpayers have made it clear they don't want to be the only ones to pay for an arena.
I understand that most of the season ticket holders live in Placer and El Dorado Counties
or the unincorporated portion of Sacramento County.

Regional means just that. The cost of a regional attraction should be borne by all not
just Sacramento City residents. We have the highest number of poor people in the six
county region. Please write to the leaders in the surrounding areas and ask them to work
with us.

Happy Holidays!!!

Sure... Lauren says tell others to do it not us.

What a SB, pass the buck, not I, response!!!
She knows that only 20% of the year the KINGS
are using the arena and the rest of the time many,
many, many other events are going on in there.

Lauren Hammond's response is a good example of why the Sacramento Kings will soon be known as either the Las Vegas, Anaheim, Kansas City or (insert city here_______) Kings.

What a shame that people have such a low opinion of this city's potential. What a shame that Lauren Hammond is an elected representative of this city.

Translation of Lauren Hammond's response:

"The Kings are as good as gone. I am going to blame Roseville and Citrus Heights when they go, so as not to hurt my reelection."

Although I will condede Lauren Hammond's statement that the other municipalities benefit just as much as Sacramento yet, contribute little. But what can we expect from municipalities who refuse to help even with their own homeless problem? Their answer is to put the homeless on a bus and send them into DT Sacramento.

It kind of reminded me of the comments made by Folsom Mayor Steve Milkos that the residents of Folsom don't want to see the Sacramento region become an independent Port of Entry because it would mean a great deal more cargo business at Mather Airport. It seems the billions of $$$ the airport system bring in every year don't benefit Folsom directly, so the Mayor stated that he would prefer if the cargo Business moved to Stockton. (So as not to disturb his residents with the limited number of cargo flights flying out of Mather Airport.)

Parochialism and lack of leadership will doom this region in more ways than one.

OK, so here's another response to my email from county supervisor Susan Peters. How I read it is: blah, blah, blah, insert generic response, blah, blah, blah. (It's the same exact response Urban_Encounter got.) It's nice to see the passion these leaders are displaying in regards to building a new arena.......
--------------------------
Dear Ms. (Lobo):

Supervisor Peters received your email and asked me to reply on her
behalf to say thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on a
new arena for Sacramento events, including the Kings. I know she is in
agreement about the value of major league sports to the community as
well as having a well maintained and functioning arena for our region.
Leadership is needed on this issue from all sides, including the
ownership of the Kings. Through innovation and teamwork among all the
interested parties, hopefully a result can be crafted to everyone's
satisfaction. Again, Supervisor Peters recognizes the importance of
what is at stake and appreciated hearing from you.

^ I got the EXACT same response from Susan Peters... to the word.

If it's going to happen, it will be built with selling off acres of land
for sprawl and hopefully enough money to build an arena.

DAMN all these people!!!!

I went to my first Nuggets game here last Saturday at the Pepsi Center. It was a beautiful, state of the art, practically brand new arena in downtown complete with it's own light rail stop. At first, walking up I was so excited thinking, "This is what could be in Sacramento soon", but after pondering it a while longer and realizing no one is going to step up to the plate, it was more like pouring salt in an open wound.

Please leaders of Sacramento don't put me in the position where I have to start cheering for the Nuggets since my home town no longer has a team...
