It's a shame that they botched the geography so badly --- they've got the river running roughly along Mopac, placing SoCo on the same side of the lake as downtown. Doh!!!

They also have an RV the size of Frost, a cloud puking lightning, and a grill flying through the air, among other things.

Well, shame on the artist for using artistic license.

Mine was sarcastic, haha. I'm all about artistic license. I think it's great.

Like it or not, 4-5 story buildings are the ONLY places downtown that are any approximation of affordable (in large part due to construction costs), and I actually enjoy keeping downtown at least having a good stock of this level of affordability.

I agree, but that one is ugly.

Viewed from up close the 5 story apartment building is actually rather attractive. That side of the building sits nicely on the rather narrow street and has some commercial ground floor activity. The 5 story building will no longer be very visible from a distance after the highrise neighbor is built. I think it will be a nice contrast to all the new high rises and leave a good patch of blue sky visible at street level.

Isn't that one also in a CVC, part of the reason for its shorter height?

Maybe, but it went up almost 15 years ago before the high-rise boom downtown. It was some of the first new housing built downtown since the 1960s or 70s. It is rather well designed except that the soundproofing between units is terrible. A friend of mine was in and out of that building in less than 6 months due to noise from all sides and also between floors. The rent was pretty steep too, and this was 13 years ago.

I personally don't think they look that bad (with the exception of that one side).

Caissons are being placed. I'd say it's under construction now.

This will be going up extremely fast - especially after the podium levels are completed.
Putting parking levels above ground vs.underground sure makes a difference in the construction time frame. Witness 5th & West.

Maybe somebody already linked to this, but the company that made the model has a lot of photos and details. It's pretty cool. Their website also has link to a Vimeo video of them building a model for another project.

This is perhaps the most excited I've been to watch something go up since 2007. Yeah, it's not that much taller than the Austonian, and the design isn't quite starchitecture (with other more daring takes on the jenga-like design already existing)... but more than any other tower of the last decade, this has the best chance of making a Frost-like statement on the skyline, something that will define the city to the rest of the world.

So great to see this enter the "official" U/C phase.
