This is kind of companies what Mangaluru need - GlobalLogic to set up innovation hubs in India for healthcare, banking. But....

------------------------------------------------------------------

"..We have also decided to expand the capacity of New Mangaluru Port with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore," Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said. The capacity of the State’s all-weather New Mangalore Port Trust would be doubled at a cost of Rs. 10,000 crore.

This investment seems different than Rs.9,000 crores Shiradighat Tunnel connectivity to port.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said ...... 100 acres for establishment of a centre of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) either in Mysuru or Mangaluru

A rare chance for Mangaluru politicians to use their tactics to get a first major research institute to coastal Karnataka. Land can be alloted at Mudipu itself along with Pharmaceutical Park. But to be on safer side show another site much nearer to airport also to delegates visiting to assess. Advantage of having NIPER at Mangaluru is that it can even focus on Marine Medicinal Research.

ICAR approves teaching Aquatic Medicine for BFSc at national level

Good that Mangaluru already has a college teaching "Aquatic Veterinary Medicine" to cure diseases of aquatic creatures. What Mangaluru needs is an institute (hopefully as a part of NIPER) for "Marine Medicine" (Marine pharmacognosy, Marine Drugs, 4, 5, Marine Pharmacology: Clinical Development) which is used for curing humans.

In the mean time CIPET has gone to Bengaluru. I was thinking that NIPER is an ambitious, CIPET is a practical wish. But.... yes, this one focuses on researches on all biotechnology subjects like bio-polymers, bio-nano, bio-sensors which are also biomedical engineering subjects. (Most probably it was my mistake to wish in a public forum that CIPET in Mangaluru should focus on medical devices. Otherwise Mangaluru would have got a normal CIPET at least.) Still Mangaluru can dream for a bigger Biomedical Engineering Education and Research Institute which also covers other advanced subjects of biomedical engineering.

Having one of best air connectivity in India with gulf countries which are base of hydrocarbon wealth and then Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals Complex makes Mangaluru best suited to be developed as Hydrocarbon Knowledge City with Hydrocarbon Skill Development Center & Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Petroleum Research. Due to good air connectivity Mangaluru can sell its Hydrocarbon Knowledge based products & services much easily in gulf countries. Mangaluru already provides good human resources services to gulf countries this can be further strengthened to provide high-end hydrocarbon engineering & industrial services to these countries.

Indian startups ready to embrace opportunities in UAE

Mangaluru should use this opportunity provided by UAE as it has better air connectivity & a working relationship. It should at least use the opportunity to attract some companies offering such services to use Mangaluru as base.

Centre calls for thrust to local electronics units since electronics was expected to be the largest import item in the country

Mangaluru has to utilize this opportunity to build Medical Electronics base. MIT-Manipal has Biomedical Engineering course, Nitte University offers BSc, MSc courses in Biomedical Science, we need more engineering colleges offering Biomedical Engineering courses with facilities for startups in diverse fields of Biomedical Engineering like bio-polymers, bio-nano, bio-sensors etc.

Mangaluru can also try to develop electronics istruments for petroleum & petrochemicals industries. NITK has STEP, MITE has Siemens Center of Excellence, similar centers of excellence are needed in other colleges to incubate industrial electronics startups.

KIOCL opened skill development centre in the fields of mining, iron and steel

Karnataka government will set up Biotech incubation centres at Dharwad, Belagavi, Bidar and Mangaluru besides take the signing of letter of intent between Bengaluru and Boston for the creation of a biotech corridor

------------------------------------------------------------------

Karnataka is promoting cities like Hubli-Dharwad, Mysore, Mangalore and Davangere to potential investors. But there have been few takers due to poor connectivity either by road or air.

Why Mangaluru's Air connectivity is bad? Who is projecting this? Mangaluru Airport ranks 12th in India handling 44 weekly International flights.

"Mysuru, Mangaluru and places such as Shivamogga are now what Bengaluru was 20 years back"

Mangaluru is much ahead of Bengaluru when it was 20 years back now in so many things like highest 36 floors building, so many international flights (& 12 flights daily to Bengaluru, did Bengaluru have 12 flights daily to any city 20 years back?), malls with all types of brands (did Bengaluru have any international brand available in any shop 20 years back?). Only thing in which Mangaluru still lacks behind 20 years old Bengaluru is R&D infrastructure. Unless R&D infrastructure is addressed Mangaluru will not become a fullfledged Knowledge City like Bengaluru.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Wondering whether Fox Petroleum Ltd investment Rs. 7,000 crores is for LNG terminal. Wait, they are also working on other things like Gaspipelines, Gas based power plants. However old news says Fox Petroleum plans to build FSRU LNG terminal in Karnataka, India. This one seems to be in Karwar. But since agreement with Mitsui for Mangaluru LNG Terminal is cancelled recently there is a chance that this project is to Mangaluru.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is keen on taking half of the 1.5 million tonnes Mangalore facility

Prestige Valley Crest
Quote:
A private residential community spread across a 4.75-acre urban site located on Bejai Museum Road, Mangalore, Prestige Valley Crest will comprise of 510 residences in two towers, with a configuration of 28-29 floors. The orientation of the two towers is optimized to address the best views of the sea on the west side of the property. The character of the development is strongly defined by the choice of materials, which are highly functional and devised to enhance the contemporary look and feel of the property. Multilevel car parking will be available for a total of 663 cars, thus meeting all residential and visitor requirements of the Prestige Valley Crest community. The development will also have a Laundrette and a Clubhouse with recreational facilities like a squash court, badminton court, party hall, indoor games area, swimming pool and a gymnasium.

On the sustainable front, rainwater-harvesting systems have been proposed in order to take advantage of the water runoff from the terraces and podium. Prestige Valley Crest will also make use of the latest technological advancements including solar powered lights, energy saving fittings, sensor controlled lighting, etc. for the common areas. This will also allow for the most efficient use of electricity as well as capturing the naturally available solar power on site. On the landscape front, in order to encourage water conservation, moisture retention additives will be added to the soil in order to increase its water retention capacity and reduce irrigation demands, with care taken to plant trees that require less water. Additionally, treated sewage effluents will be recycled for irrigation purposes.

The government has taken a decision to develop smart cities around all the major ports across the country including Mangaluru
Quote:
“Each port will construct one smart city. We are trying to do this. Each city will be built with an expenditure of aboutRs.3,000-4,000 crore. These will be green smart cities,” the Minister had said in February last year.
Quote:
The government has planned to build wider roads, advanced townships and special economic zones, along with ship-breaking and ship-building centres, as part of smart port cities.
So this is what they are planning at Maravoor!? Though the type of projects the government has not specified I wish it to be a 'Shipping IT City' filled with Maritime Informatics, Ship & Port Engineering, Design & Technology companies so to give a IT/ITES boost to Mangaluru. Let us see whether Gurupur river is fortunate enough to have green field smart cities on both sides so near to airport and port.

Union Ministry of Shipping's deputy secretary, Abhishek Chandra, said: “The 200 projects comprise 20 projects per port and together have a US $ 6 billion investment potential.

Even home page of Mangalore SEZ weblink states A Smart City designed to improve quality of life.

Union Shipping Ministry is planning for waterway on Netravathi river from Dharmasthala to Mangaluru under Sagarmala scheme. (National Waterway 74, National Waterway 43, PIB). The union government has sanctioned a bridge across Sharavati river, Uttara Kannada district under Sagarmala project. In the same way why not Mangalore have a bridge at Adyar across Netravati river under Sagarmala project? This bridge is critical for the growth of Mudipu & Ira industrial area.

1000(?) acres Plastic Park next year, 4th stage of MRPL, IT Park extension

Two line doubling projects sanctioned

Sanctioned doubling of 1.5 km line between Netravathi Cabin and Mangaluru Central Railway Station at a cost of Rs. 18.93 crore. The budget also sanctioned doubling of the line between Subrahmanya Road Station and Sakleshpur at a cost of Rs. 500 crore.

Tree Park in Gundya by Pilikula
Innovation Hub to come up at Pilikula by next academic year

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to announce construction of a tunnel at Shiradi Ghat during budget session

With Tree Park, Waterway & Tunnel with tourism facilities expecting a good growth in tourism industry around the region.

Mangaluru 3rd cleanest city in country

Mangaluru's ambitious Smart City proposal was of Rs. 40,000 crores!

This is huge compared to any of selected 20 smart city proposals. (1.Bhubaneswar-Rs 4,537 crore, 2.Pune-Rs 3,000 crore, 3.Jaipur-Rs 2,403 crore?, 4.Surat-Rs 2,597 crore, 5.Kochi-Rs 2076 crore, 6.Ahmedabad-Rs 2290 crore, 7. Jabalpur-Rs 3,998.5 crore, 8.Visakhapatnam-Rs 1,602 crore?, 9.Solapur - Rs 2,247 crore, 10.Davanagere-Rs 1307.18 crore?, 11.Indore Rs 5,099.6 crore, 12.NDMC-Rs 1897.27 crore, 13.Coimbatore-Rs. 1,570 crore, 14.Kakinada-Rs 1,993.03 crore, 15.Belgavi-Rs 3534.5 crore, 16.Udaipur—Rs 1,221 crore, 17-Guwahati-Rs 2,256 crore, 18.Chennai-Rs 1,366.24 crore, 19.Ludhiana-Rs 1,049.28 crore, 20.Bhopal-Rs 3437 crore?, Total-Rs.50,802 crore). Compare it with total proposal amount of Rs.50,802 crore for 20 cities! In spite of such a huge proposal Mangalore getting 49th rank among 98 proposed smart cities tells the story of a commendable work gone behind preparing proposal. I hope for the next round Mangalore will submit clear cut view on sources of generating finance for this huge amount, inclusiveness, SWOT & risk management.

Mangaluru scored 50.79% compared to top scorer Bhubaneshwar 78.83%.

Anyway Mangaluru should keep trying for Dubai project also. (if not Dubai is already a proposed investor for Kunjathbail smart city.)

Shiradi Ghat phase 2 work from Monday
Quote:
The minister for road and transport and highways Nitin Gadkari will lay the foundation stone of Phase II of the work on Shiradi Ghat -- that connects Mangaluru with Bengaluru-- on March 28 as well as the fourlaning of BC-Road to Shiradi as well as a stretch from Sakleshpur to Hassan.

Of the 352 km stretch between the two cities, 180-km is four-laned (till Hassan).

The road has one of the highest vehicular density with 20,000 passenger car units (PCUS) per day. Once the four-laning is done, time travel will be cut down to 6 hours from the present 8 hours.

Ministry to tutor cities on bettering the Smart City Plan at a workshop
Workshop on smart cities next month
Quote:
Regarding Mangaluru city’s plan, Mr. Ponnuraj said that it lacked vision on immediate deliverables and one that could bring immediate relief to the issues that people in the city faced.
I wonder whether already selected 20 cities have long term vision & deliverables also or have only short term vision & deliverables as their smart city project cost is less. If Mangalore will have both short & long term visions then it is great. Also wonder what type of Business Model the selected cities have opted.

‘Infrastructure needs a push’
Quote:
Participants and panellists at a discussion on urban infrastructure planning and development in Mangaluru on Saturday offered suggestions, including widening of roads, making Mangaluru an IT hub, exploiting solar energy, adopting rainwater harvesting etc., to improve the quality of life in the coastal town.
Quote:
Executive Engineer, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board, said that with the city growing, the storage had become insufficient. ... . The new dam being built should be able to solve the problem, he said.
Rain harvesting is a good suggestion. Lakes' restoration and recharging of ground water in suburbs is also a must. If rain is unpredictable like this Mangalore may soon need a desalination plant. (Industries in DK mull setting up desalination plant to tide over water crisis). Current problem of water shortage seems to be due to MRPL & MSEZ drawing Netravati river water during non-rainy season October-May.(The Hindu). It is sad that region is lacking water storage infrastructure (a weakness)(both natural & man-made) though placed in highest rain receiving zone (a strength) of the state which is enough to cater the needs of multiple times the current population. (The chief minister promises on Paschima Vahini Scheme which envisages harnessing the west-flowing rivers.). To avoid the threat of waterscarcity & draught Mangalore needs a smart plan for solving water shortage issues. Hope this threat is identified in SWOT analysis of Smart City Proposal and mitigation measures are also suggested. Even smart ground water level monitoring is one of neccessities along with ground recharging. Harvest rainwater to face scarcity: expert

'Neglecting traditional water harvesting techniques adversely affect sources'
Quote:
Dr Shenoy said that the elected representatives, officials and public should raise awareness on rain water harvesting techniques. India receives second highest rainfall in the world.
Good thing is many of newspapers mainly in local languages are creating awareness on rainwater harvesting by publishing daily a case of rainwater harvesting where the harvester is benefitted. What is needed is a simple Smart Plan for Water Management. A few of steps I suggest are below.

1. Prepare a pamphlet or brochure detailing advantage and need for rainwater harvesting. Not sure whether Karnataka has released RWH guidelines mentioned here. In pamphlet, first of all, issue of ground water depletion has to be explained neatly and then measures to increase ground water level should be discussed along with other techniques of rainwater harvesting. In case of recharging ground water, awareness has to be created on direct and indirect techniques of filling wells including soak pits. More importantly awareness should be created against pit latrines which may contaminate ground water and on need for drainage connection. (Pilikula urban eco-park work to be launched today. A good way to create awareness.)

2. A team has to be formed for creating awareness on waterharvesting. Currently MCC has formed a team to identify wells in MCC area and cleaning the unused wells. The same team could be strenghened with volunteers.

3. Public well should harvest roof water of surrounding houses. For this pipes have to be put up from homes to well. Similarly private wells can use not only well owners roof water but also nearby neighbours roof water who does not have well. Water which is underground can not evaporate easily.

4. Just a couple of years back there was no solar panel traders in Mangalore. Now so many firms have comeup. Similarly Mangalore needs firms offering waterharvesting consultancies and equipments. I don't know which are the state and central government schemes (rainwater harvesting micro-financing) which can help here though Karnataka & a few other states have made harvesting compulsory for buildings and provide some rebate on tax payment to individuals. Meanwhile, the district administration has issued an order asking the residential units, industries and other commercial complexes having more than 2000 sq ft of area to implement rainwater harvesting mechanisms, and to recharge water table for borewells with suitable mechanisms.

5. A local team to watch against dumping of waste in well, regular cleaning of well for things like fallen leaves, maintenance measures against evaporation and annual maintenance of stuff like soak pit. CCTV camera can be used to monitor against dumping of waste.

6. A software application which can tell us everything is going on perfectly by collecting manual & automatic field data on maintenance, monitoring and water level & quality. Even river water supply to industries should be monitored, controlled & limited againt same parameters. Hope that MCC has computerized database of buildings with more than 2000 sq ft for which rainwater harvesting is going to be compulsory.

Quote:
Before a rainwater harvesting system is built, it's helpful to use digital tools. For instance, if you want to detect if a region has a high rainwater harvesting potential, rainwater harvesting GIS maps can be made using an online interactive tool. Or if you need to estimate how much water is needed to fulfill a community's water needs, the Rain is Gain tool helps with this. Tools like these can save time and money before a commitment to build a system is undertaken, in addition to making the project sustainable and last a long time.
Above paragraph is from wikipedia. Estimating how much water is needed depends upon predictability of rain. Safe one is to assume rain starts late June and proportinate it to annual lowest rain received by river catchment areas & population and industries.

‘Rainwater harvesting should be compulsory’
Quote:
In a meeting with representatives of citizens’ associations and non-government organisations on Thursday, Mr. Ibrahim said that the civic body should promote rainwater harvesting to mitigate water scarcity. The proposal should be placed in the MCC council and made compulsory, he said. Mr. Ibrahim said that the corporation should also take up work of recharging ground water including allowing roadside drains to percolate water.
So far the government has failed to fill lakes with clean storm water. Will they percolate from roadside drains? Clean water or gutter water? 40,000 water samples found not fit for drinking. Water in many city wells not potable due to sewage water seepage contamination.

Political parties will not go for making anything compulsory as they will loose votes. Helmet is made compulsory by court not the government. But by making water harvesting compulsory for big properties rainwater flowing on road will be drastically reduced and also problem of water falling on head of pedestrians on footpaths will be solved by making waterharvesting compulsory for commercial buildings. Keeping targets like all government & aided schools will have rooftop solar panels & rainwater harvesting in next two years can be useful. Good news is an NGO has already prepared a plan of rainwater harvesting of wells aided by self-help groups.

And finally

City chalks out fresh strategies to ensure there is no repeat of water crisis
Quote:
This includes storing water up to five-metres at the new under construction vented dam, utilizing water generated from STPs to fullest possible extent, ensuring continued water supply from Lakya Dam of KIOCL Ltd beyond May 31.

Other steps mooted is scientific recharging of all existing bore wells and cap on sinking more bore wells in future, rejuvenation of existing lakes - major and minor dotting the city. The other major step mulled is compulsory implementation of rule in zoning regulation that mandates buildings to undertake rain water harvesting and it's monitoring by town planning section of MANGALURU City Corporation before issuing the completion certificate to parties concerned.
Zilla panchayat to make rain water harvesting mandatory

Is there one more rule to be followed?:- Prohibition of buildings construction near lakes

Here is suggestion for Cycle Hiring & Tracks.

And there are some good things happening towards improving Mangalore and surrounding area as a knowledge hub with stress on R&D. Specifically there are a few new intiatives to strengthen healthcare domain knowledgebase.

Now, faculty of Manipal University get bitten by startup bug
Quote:
Manipal University Technology Business Incubator (MUTBI) has been constantly progressing with the startup companies in alignment with the Government of India initiative of 'Make in India', the recent addition of companies in MUTBI in healthcare domain has been supported by direct grants from various government ministries. These companies are developing healthcare solutions to low and middle income group population. .... Currently PetaVista Healthcare & IT Solutions Pvt Ltd and Visint Health Care Pvt Ltd. Petavista was incorporated this year and its Directors include faculties from various streams from health science to engineering. ... "Our start-up is developing a low cost solution to prevent foot ulceration and amputation by predicting it in advance with a remedial solution for middle and low income population," said Arun Maiya, Professor, Department of Physiotherapy, SOAHS. .... " VISINT coined from Vision and Intelligence, which effectively states our Vision of developing Intelligent Vision care solutions for efficient public health delivery to meet eye care needs in India and scalable globally. Our Mission is to develop cost-effective and indigenous technology solutions to enhance doctor-patient relationship," said Krithica and Dr Ramesh S Ve, directors of the start-up.
But Mangaluru needs an aggressive man like this one if it wants to promote Health Tourism. Best way is to Mangaluru Mayor take up this responsibility on his shoulder and interact with probable investors directly. As I mentioned earlier Mayor has to keep direct contact with NRIs in Gulf to get UAE smart city through their influence. Just imagine Mayor talking to UK embassy and getting these things to Mangaluru:- Indo-UK Institutes of Health(2) & HyperCat Incubator.

He said the government has taken steps to develop 100 cities as 'Smart Cities' in the country and since stations are the beginning of any city, they will also be developed as "smart stations".
Whether 'Worldclass Station' and 'Smart Station' are one and the same? What this means is Mangaluru will have 'Smart Port' and 'Smart Railway Station'. And even 'Smart Airport'. When will Mangaluru have 'Smart Transportation Hub' for buses?

'The revised vision document and detailed project report for Smart Mangaluru has been sent to the Ministry of Urban Development'

But the latest news is

Let us see whether Gurupur river is fortunate enough to have green field smart cities on both sides so near to airport and port.
These are types of companies Mangaluru should be able to attract:- Singapore-based MariApps Marine Solutions Private Limited became the first company to launch operations in SmartCity Kochi (SCK)

Mangaluru is one among 7 of the greenest cities in India

Hope Mangaluru's Smart City Plan is good enough to maintain & improve on this. I am also hoping that smart city proposal stresses on increasing open space and greenery. We need to know now what is Environmental Performance Index (EPI) or Green Index now and what it will be after Smart City project implementation.

Mangaluru is also expected to get two mechanised food and fertilizers plants (mechanised food and fertilizer handling facilities at port), a petrochemical hub (a Gas Based Petrochemical Complex) and a fishery harbour under this (Sagarmala) massive project.
The Centre intends to link the mechanised food units, mechanised fertiliser units and petrochemical units with the port. It has allocated Rs 220 crore for developing Mangaluru as a petrochemical hub.

Rs 220 crore could be for developing gas pipeline infrastructure to connect with industries.

H-Energy will build a trunk pipeline that will connect Dhabol and Mangaluru

MRPL Expansion will aid economic growth
Quote:
Amid opposition from the land owners for the acquisition of another 1,050 acres for MRPL’s Phase IV expansion, the company said that bye-products produced following the expansion would usher in economic growth in the region by supporting other industries.

MRPL managing director H. Kumar said that bye-products such as Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) are used in manufacturing of detergents.

There are not many soap manufacturers in the State and the produce hence would support such ventures. Pet Coke, which is used in the cement industry at present, could be used in gasification plants of fertilizer manufacturers thereby reducing dependency on gas, Mr. Kumar said.
1,050 acres of land is spread over 10 villages

SAC to introduce innovative BSc course from 2016-17
Quote:
A study has revealed that students of economics with mathematics and statistics background have excellent job opportunities in the industry. Also there is scope for higher studies and research in economics in professional institutions.
What we need is combination of specialized courses on informatics like Marine or Maritime Informatics (including Engineering Informatics in Port Operations and Logistics), Geoinformatics, Industrial Informatics (Oil/ Petroleum & Gas, Plastics, Chemicals, Pharmaceutical etc), Energy Informatics (including Renewable, I think middle east countries are going to focus on solar energy in a big way), Financial Informatics (BFSI), Healthcare Informatics, Education informatics for students of Information Technology along with BCA/MCA, BE/ME degrees. The students should study an optional subject like logisitics, healthcare, industrial management to make them more ready for a specialized industrial sector IT/ITES human resources needs. And this will also help students to start their own ventures as they have acquired domain specific basic knowledge. With the basic knowledge of a domain students can interact with other students specialized in domain or domain experts and form JVs.

And in the mean time let us hope that IT Parks like 'Mangalore Hills Internet City' or 'Brigade IT Park' will attract companies working on these domains by creating digital clusters focusing on these sectors.

This is what I stated earlier.

Government plans national highway grids for smooth travel; 27 corridors identified
Quote:
All these stretches will be of four lanes and will provide more road space for seamless transport. The total length of these corridors, including ones such as Kanyakumari to Srinagar, Porbandar to Kolkata, Surat to Paradip Port, Rameswaram to Dehradun and Mangalore Port to Chennai Port, is about 36,600 km. Out of this, about 30,100 km are already NHs. But only 18,800 km of them are of four-lanes.

So, whether Mangaluru-Shivamogga NH-169 wiil be fourlane throughout?
