I'm never exactly sure how to differentiate Brutalism from simple Modernism
raw, dank stinky concrete. it's not the style that makes brutalism so hated.
it's the materials and how they are presented and how those materials weather..and how they smell...and absorb and retain stains...and how quickly they crumble.
and how so many cities and developers used the style to cut corners, save money and "throw up" raw concrete buildings and pass them off as legitimate architecture.

I wouldn't call the LDS Church Office Building Brutalist, but Salt Lake does, in fact, have three iconic buildings that fit this description.

The Behavorial Science Building on the University of Utah campus.

The MultiEthnic Highrise downtown:

And probably Salt Lake's most known and biggest beast...

The residential tower on State.

Then there is Salt Lake Community College, which is mostly filled with this type...

Much of the University of Utah's campus is brutalist, including the Medical Plaza Towers.

Beyond that, at the mouth of the canyon, the residential high-rises/mid-rises can fit the bill, as well.

So there you have it.

UCSD's Geisel Library

I love the Salk institute so I gotta post another pic. I think it's a great picnic spot since you can walk to the end of it and find yourself on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Pacific.

This one ain't so pretty but I see it everyday in my area
SIPA- Columbia's school of international public affairs.

At my old school, I always had an interest with Bunche Hall, it was the subtle purple hue.

Some great, seductive urbanity going on there. I love places like that. They have this vibrant, Gotham feel.

I forgot about this tower in the central city area of Salt Lake City:

Too bad I don't have a better photo of this.

Definitely not the only Brutalist stadium there is/has been. RFK in DC, Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, Riverfront in Cincy, Fulton County in Atlanta, Shea in Queens, Veterans in Philly...

This is the Weyerhaeuser Headquarters in Federal Way, Washington. I think it would count as brutalism.

You mean you're not interested in living in a cold, dank concrete box?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Why, because some of its cladding was painted blue?

It most definitely is of the Brutalist "style", and built with pure functionality in mind at the same time all of the other cookie-cutter brutalist major league stadia were being constructed across the nation.

How can we talk about Qualcom and Shea Stadium without bringing up the Seattle Kingdom??:

Then there's the Trinity Square Car Park which is the tallest structure in the city of Gateshead, England (and currently being dismantled):

Some of these are actually really handsome. Weyerhauser, the LBJ Library, and Mairie d'Ivry: exceedingly so. LBJ, in particular, demonstrates what Brutalism can be at its best. Spare and monumental.
