2011 Grey Cup coming to Vancouver

By Mike Beamish, Vancouver Sun
February 26, 2009 6:01 PM

A Grey Cup festival culminating with the CFL championship game in 2011 will be the next feature event at a refurbished B.C. Place Stadium following the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Premier Gordon Campbell and B.C. Lions owner David Braley will make the announcement at a joint press conference Friday morning in downtown Vancouver.

The Lions last played host to Grey Cup festival in 2005, when the Vancouver economy received a $40-million jolt from visitor spending, according to Tourism Vancouver.

Vancouver's successful 2011 application represents the third straight year the Grey Cup game has been awarded to a city in Western Canada.

Edmonton was just named host of the 2010 Grey Cup, and Calgary is the site of this year’s game.

^ Great! Thanks for the news....But in the last rendering, the building
is really short....I was expecting a taller one

What happened to the taller buildings?

I don't want taller buildings around the new stadium, atleast not right adjacent to it. A 600+ footer across the street would be pretty cool though.

What about two 60-story buildings on either side of the stadium with a suspension bridge in between them? Yes?

^ Too bad there aren't much space at the back. It would be better
to place the buildings at the back so it doesn't block the view of
the stadium from False Creek.

Thats precisely what i was thinking. Even from the air having the stadium surrounded by towers would block it off completely. atleast expose the south/southeast side so that it can be seen and the sunlight can get through the roof.

Then stick a bunch of tall bastards along the back.

^ You don't want the Grey Cup coming to a newly renovated BC Place?

If anything it should spur along the construction schedule and provide an impetus to finish the project on time.

Sounds like a great way to showcase and get some immediate use out of the updated stadium.

Love the rendering of the finished stadium renovations, though I still feel a twinge of "why the hell didn't they get this done for the Olympics?" every time I see one.

Then it would have gone on Carole James' "Olympic costs" lists, along with the PMB and new St. Paul's Campus...
