What's that smell?

Enbridge venting natural gas in Gloucester area

If there’s a foul smell in Gloucester on Tuesday, don’t blame the dog. It was Enbridge.

The company planned to vent natural gas in the area of Innes Road, Highway 417 and Blair Road as it takes a pipeline out of service.

The venting was to occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting. Residents might notice a smell and hear the sound of the venting, but Enbridge is reassuring the public that “it is released in a safe and controlled manner.”

“Although the situation is safe, those nearby may find the smell or noise unpleasant and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” Enbridge said in a statement posted on its website.

In February, a similar venting in southwest Ottawa blanketed much of the city in a foul sulphur smell, forcing some building to be evacuated and flooding the city’s 911 dispatchers with more than 200 calls.
