love the jaggedness of 30HY's design . .
the lunging angles . . and that outrageous jut of horizontal
that is the sky-deck just beneath the crown,
certainly distinguishes this masterpiece . .

Those last two pics got me thinking about something and I've figured it out.

This complex reminds me of when all those then-new skyscrapers in Moscow's CBD were going up seemingly up all at once.

I can start in a few places:

1. The 8 Spruce/56 Leonard juxtaposition is nothing short of incredible.

2. 125G looks almost throwback, and elegantly so.

Me too, although I think that this is a vastly superior development. It felt like every building in the Moscow development was screaming "Look at me!" The Yards has a more cohesive look while still having special individual towers.

Best time for High Line is early morning or late at night. Its gotten so busy, and as the summer crowds kick into high gear, its even more cumbersome to traverse.

In that last shot, check out 10 Hudson. If I told you its 896′, I'd be hard to believe, but it is. Just utterly dwarfed.

Nice view. This tower will look good from afar only. Up close it's rather anti-urban in design, especially with that awful base on 10th avenue. Best tower however in the complex.

HY is built over a working rail yard. It's not supposed to be that cutesy-poo "urban" at ground level. No shops or restaurants were eliminated in building it (maybe a McDonalds, the horror the horror lol)and in fact they created more retail than already existed. "Big steel/heavy metal" and "platform/plaza" attributes are totally in sync with the site.

Thanks for the reminder that this was built over a rail yard. I had almost forgotten!

It's not something that would work around most of Manhattan, but it had to be done here. Besides the fact that it's built over the railyards, the main reason it had to be done is because Related is basically trying to recreate a slice of Midtown on the west side, where virtually not much existed. You may be able to get by with creating office towers and residential buildings, but the shops and stores and restaurants can't be recreated on the scale of what you have on the other side of the island, and along the major shopping avenues. They had to create it all at once, in one location. In that sense, it could be mistaken for a typical suburban mall. But in actuality, it will be that in appearance only.

I cannot think of anything remotely anti-urban about this building.

A 1,300 ft. tower with massive retail base and without a single parking space, all sitting on top of one of the busiest rail yards on the planet, is not exactly anti-urban in my book. What am I missing here?
