Excellent! I only had a single day to spend in Brussels in 2010. I could have used a few more.

Another entry from our new globe-trotting mthq. j/k

Something of an eye opening thread for me. I didn't realize Brussels had hills and grit. Good stuff to know. Thanks for the tour.

Nice tour. How many days did you spend there, and how much did you get to see? It looks a bit more used/well-worn than I imagined it to be. BTW, the city's central square has got to be one of the best showcases of architecture on the entire continent; I never get tired of seeing it.

^if you think Grand Place looks amazing in pics, wait till you see it in person. Utterly insane. I tend to think Grand Place has a curse on my cameras as every photo including the ones posted here don't come out as good as I'd like.

Anyways I spent two days (same as in 2008). I've covered a lot of ground in the South and Central (the touristy section), so I dedicated more time this year to the North. North (Nord) is where the skyscrapers are along with immigrant neighborhoods that were the most vibrant I've seen anywhere in Europe. The weirdest part was seeing little kids 5-8 yrs old playing and running around right past half naked prostitutes in windows similar to Amsterdam as their red light district is in this area of freshly settled newcomers.

thanks for the feedback everyone. I always love comments.

that tower has been in scaffolding since I was last here in 2008
I've read that the scaffolding has been there since the 1980s - in fact, it's so old, the scaffolding now need restoring!

There were also concerns that, as it was anchored to the building, removing it might actually damage the building, leading to additional cost.
project management fail

Unfortunatly you are right! It's the stunning Palace of Justice, the largest building built in Europe in the 19th century. In the eighties the owner - the 'Regie der Gebouwen', which is supposed to take care of the national govenment buildings- started to restore the building. Only the dome on top has been finished. Now they're doubting about what to do with that building in teh future and they are waiting for further restauration untill.... who knows?
The scaffolding itself is rotting and the Minister President of the Brussels Region went to a court, where the judge ordered the scaffolding must be removed!

It's a sad story, somewhat like the main Brussels Train Station (South), which is a kind of a never ending nightmare too.... but that's another story.

Great pictures anyway! Thanks for sharing them Mthq!

I have lived in Brussels, and I think it's easily the grittiest capital in Western Europe (and also the dirtiest, to be honest).

Fortunately there's al lot of refurbish going on all around the city. Buildings, streets, squares... have been renovated or will be renovated.
But it's true Brussels has got some gritty areas, especially in the west, but even in the city center some places need to bee cleaned. And the area around the South Station is awfull!

Where and when did you live in Brussels?
