Bordeaux (French pronunciation: ​[bɔʁdo]; Gascon Occitan: Bordèu) is a port city on the Garonne River in the Gironde department in southwestern France.

The municipality (commune) of Bordeaux proper has a population of 243,626 (2012). Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Bordeaux is the centre of the Bordeaux Métropole. With 749,595 inhabitants (as of 2013) and 1,178,335 in the metropolitan area, it is the fifth largest in France, after Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Lille, and before Toulouse. Bordeaux is the world's major wine industry capital. It is home to the world's main wine fair, Vinexpo, and the wine economy in the metro area takes in 14.5 billion euros each year. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century. After Paris, Bordeaux has the highest number of preserved historical buildings of any city in France.

I really need to visit Bordeaux, the south-west side of France is terra incognita for me. It may change when the new high speed line will open, Bordeaux will be at only two hours from Paris Montparnasse.

It gets on my nerves when things of France's economy are that slow, when most foreigners would probably kill to have a jewel like this in their countries.
That's why I've been pissed at the French state, those to always slow down the economy with their overwhelming bureaucracy and tons of obsolete regulations.
Hopefully pro-biz Macron can pass some efficient bills to boost it. It's got to get faster.

I don't really see it, quite the oposite, the commercial activity seems to be quite healthy in Bordeaux.
Modern and old retail spaces, big chains mixed with small independent stores.

Don't forget that those pictures are taken on sunday morning.

This thing is yet sort of common in France's metro areas well below a million inhabitants.
It's kinda provincial, really.

Bordeaux's over a million. Light rail is too short, it's capacity's too weak over there. Those fed up with these light-rail vehicles overcrowded on a random weekday use buses as a trick...

They need something like some underground commuter trains going through the old core; like an actual subway/RER with bigger trains running through tunnels dug in the subsoil.

I know Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse have a bit of something more efficient like this already, but it feels ridiculously tiny to someone born and raised in Paris.
Never went to Lille myself (always skipped it for Belgium and the Netherlands), but I think they started something more serious too.

Frankly, the whole nation should be paying for Nice and Bordeaux to start developing the same.
