Sounds like they're building the amenities first to lure the population/make the neighborhood desirable to a larger set.

They are going to break ground on that New Beer and food Barn in one month.

Coolest architecture I've seen in this area.... maybe ever.

^^ I'm so excited that they'll be breaking ground soon. That'll be a block away from my new place. I was told about The Barn a few months back when I put a deposit down on the house at Park Moderns and have eagerly been awaiting a timeline. Yet another reason why I finally decided to leave the burbs and head to the core.

Can't wait. I've seen all they had there for TBD Fest and then Sactoberfest, that spot is already establishing itself as a festival destination. The Barn will really anchor that area in West Sac and be great for the region!

I'm not sure how long this has been in the works, but the TBD and Docks area are gaining a lot of momentum lately. I imagine this will also make way for the Broadway bridge. Go West Sac!

Silos along Sacramento River to be torn down soon
Oct 22, 2014, 6:06am PDT
Ben van der Meer
Staff Writer-Sacramento Business Journal

Silos along the Sacramento River that hark back to a more industrial riverfront in West Sacramento will come down beginning next week.

When the former Cemex cement plant towers begin their encounter with the wrecking ball next Tuesday, it also will be a landmark moment in the area's future, as an opening to new development.

According to the city of West Sacramento, the Pioneer Bluff area along the river immediately south of where Highway 50 crosses is envisioned as a future retail, residential and office area as industrial uses like the cement plant are phased out.

The idea is to replicate the city's success with the Bridge District to the north, where new residential and retail is under development immediately north and south of Raley Field.

So.... They were going to start work on the beer barn, what the heck happened? I haven't heard anything about it in a while. Seems like construction is almost 3 months overdue.

Yea, what is happening? I see a lot of progress in the apartments and they're demolishing those old silos south of the bridge, but haven't seen anything in the area where the barn is supposed to be going.

I just noticed a few days ago that a chain link fence and construction trailer have gone up where the Barn is supposed to go. Assuming that's what it's for, looks like it's finally getting started.

It'll be a great addition for those living on both sides of the river!

West Sacramento looks at getting more property for future development

Quote:
The city of West Sacramento this week could finalize acquisition of two parcels from its former redevelopment agency, clearing the way for development.
Both parcels, at 706 Tower Court and 811 West Capitol Ave., are part of a long-term plan the city adopted in 2013.
"This is just following through on what we were planning to do," said Katie Yancey, a senior program manager in West Sacramento's economic development department.

Looks like this will be another low-income housing development?

I'm not sure if this new Broderick's made out of shipping containers is cool or horrifying.

It's horrifying. Definitely a fad right now. Was reading this yesterday and was thinking we are lucky not to have any in Sac (other than the giant shipping containers known as the Arena hotel tower)

Shipping container apartments coming to Phoenix

And 50 years from now when these buildings are old and to be demolished to make way for another project, preservationists will be trying to save it

More horrifying than the current dirt pit it seeks to replace? This isn't Downtown.

Der Biergarten and Republic in Midtown are both made of containers, I like them just fine but thought it was silly that the city forced Biergarten to completely clad the containers and otherwise made them jump through hoops because a couple of local business owners raised a fuss. I like the container-building idea just fine, especially if it can help create new housing that is less expensive than the current costs of new construction.

The question is, how high can you stack them?

Depends on the application, supposedly around 7 high, which gives you kind of a mid-rise, unless there was some other supporting structure used to hold them in place. But beyond that height you have other issues like elevators and life safety systems, which eats into the cost savings you'd get using the modular containers, so it's probably better for a modular mid-rise type solution rather than something really tall.

Surprise! West Sacramento development application calls for two hotels on one site

Quote:
The developer of a Springhill Suites hotel planned for West Sacramento has doubled down: His application includes a second hotel on the same site.
It's the latest sign of a resurgence in the region's hotel industry, which was hit hard by the recession. Last year, area hotels posted their best performance in rate and occupancy since the recession. And a long lull in hotel construction has ended, with a string of new proposals.
Projects include hotels at Sacramento International Airport, in Placerville, and in the mixed-use tower that the Sacramento Kings are building next to the arena downtown.
Three proposals have appeared this year in West Sacramento alone, including one on the west side of town. The other two are proposed by Nihal Developments for a site at 3425 Reed Ave., just off Interstate 80. The parcel of undeveloped land is next to an existing Hampton Inn & Suites at Stillwater Road.
