Bi-national hosts do not work. The Games are held in one nation, around one geographical region.

Always someone who just HAS to try and be different. And miserable.

Fortunately the prissy holier than thou attitude is quite rare, now.

Could the Olympics and ParaOlympics be rolled into one big event and stretched out over a month?

I don't understand the break myself. Although some good suggestions were made to have the Para-Olympics first, allowing a good test for the venues, the pavilions, build excitement, etc.

World Cup is more likely but you would have to convert most stadiums to turf. Commonwealth in Edmonton is the only Major stadium in Canada that still uses grass.

The IOC would like most of their venues within and 1hour from the main facility.

Burnaby Lake Olympic Rowing Centre - Burnaby
Sports: Rowing, Canoe/Kayak Flatwater
Capacity: 10,000
(NEW)
Requires a warm up lake and judging by the hassles there have been just for dredging not likely

Burnaby Lake Olympic Slalom Course - Burnaby
Sports: Canoe/Kayak Slalom
Capacity: 8,000 temporary
(NEW)
This is white water so BL is out.

Oh, is that what they're calling realism and practicality now?

The idea of hosting between Vancouver and Seattle is ridiculous. Think of the differences involved. If anything, its Toronto's turn to host next.

If you believe you have exclusive a priori knowledge of what is realistic and practical, yeah, that's exactly what they call it...

The differences between South Korea and Japan are vast - yet they successfully co-hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Which differences, specifically, between Vancouver and Seattle are so completely insurmountable as to be 'ridiculous'?

Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying that about, because, I agree with this.

In fact, I said so earlier on in this thread.

The only way this happens is if someone screws up as horrible as Montreal did, and nobody but Vancouver / Seattle bid, like Los Angeles in 1984.

The World Cup is hosted in Multiple cities in a country. Generally, people will only go to one game per day. The schedule is also more controlled and fixed. The sheer number of events and logistics of the Olympics do not lend themselves well to multiple countries hosting them.

...nor two cities. Tourism Vancouver's suggestion of hosting the FIFA World Cup between Vancouver and Seattle is asinine. They clearly did not do their homework on what the World Cup is and what's needed to host them.

Why build athletes villages at all? Hold future games in port cities and have the athletes penned up in luxury cruise ships. Having 6 docked along the harbour even with temp piers is a lot cheaper then building housing and they could be used for multiple Olympics. You could also get a lot sleeper rail cars, in a small amount of space and when it's done they can be relocated where ever they are needed. The housing is one of the biggest challenges for hosting the games as many of the venues are already in place in most major cities. The IOC would just need to be more flexible in allowing more options. From a security standpoint ports and railyards are usually fenced off and could be easily secured.

^Excellent idea. And something Toronto should look at for the bid they will almost undoubtably submit for 2020 or 2024.

How do you suppose they'll get cruise ships in to Lake Ontario?

They're building quite a massive village for the Pan-Am games.

Well, Torontonians are thinking the world of the Pan Ams. There was a lot of celebration in the city when they won the bid...they're treating it as if it were an Olympics. I'm quite sure there has been some bitter resentment after seeing Vancouver hog the Olympic spotlight in Canada for the pas few years after they lost their 2008 Olympic bid in 2001 to Beijing.

Oh right, Ontario wants to create an "Own the Pan-Ams" program. I am not kidding.
