Question A name for our regional smart card

I would think/hope that the naming of our smart card would be put to public competition.

For RAV, they privately came up with the "Canada Line"...I'm sure if they came forward to the public about that, there would have been a flat "no" for that name. Then again, when Translink held a public competition to name the PMC Line they came up with the "Evergreen Line" and we were disappointed once again.

So, without further adieu what are your suggestions for a potential smart card name?

I believe Translink came up with the "ORCA" some years ago standing for "One Regional Card for All" and it also fits well here in the west coast....but somehow, Seattle stole the name/acronym and used it for their own smart card.

Some other names worldwide:

Hong Kong - Octopus
London - Oyster
Toronto - Presto
Montreal - Opus
St. John's - M-Card
Minneapolis - Go-To Card
Philadelphia - Freedom
San Diego - Compass
Atlanta - Breeze
Los Angeles - TAP
San Francisco - TransLink Card and EZ-Rider
Boston - CharlieCard
Washington DC - SmarTrip
Oslo - Flexus
Melbourne - myki
Perth - SmartRider
Wellington - Snappercard

Wasn't there another name that was better... Spirit Line? But then they chose Evergreen because it "matched" the surroundings... or whatever.

I liked ORCA dammit.

I liked Orca as well, but the acronym for it is pretty dumb.. don't need a stupid acronym to use a short word that sounds good. I think we should use it anyway! Screw Seattle.

Exactly, use it anyway. There is no legal or other impediment why Translink couldn't just use ORCA as planned. Its a good name. Why fix what isn't broken? Sure, Seattle may have duplicated the idea, but there is nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, "Otter" is pretty good. "Ocean" is another possibility, keeping with the "O" motif. "Lynx", "Coast" or "Ride" might also work.

I have no confidence in Translink to come up with a catchy, interesting name with flair. Instead we'll likely get something bland like "TRIP", "TRAC" or "TRAX".

*sigh*

if you're in high school or something, you get a GoCard which would be a good name for a smart card.

SkyCard haha, but I like Orca a little more...since it offers something contrasting to sky or skytrain, and fits the vancouver enviroment. I should do a sketch design on that card

ORCA is by far the best, skypass is OK, hmm, hard to think of a good name. local wildlife, mountains, rivers etc... but none of them have a good ring. We could just call it the Quachi! hehehehehe
