SASSNITZ – beautiful coast town on Germany's largest island
ABOUT SAßNITZ
Sassnitz is a small seaside town, situated in the southeastern edge of Rügen, Germany's largest island, right next to the white rocks of Jasmund National Park. Rügen is just north of East Germany, former DDR. The zoo and the wildlife park are also famous.
MY EXPERIENCES
We visited Sassnitz as a day trip with the cheap Trelleborg-Sassnitz ferry (only 4 hours from Sweden). Many Swedes go there just to buy cheap alcohol, but the town is highly worth visiting with its hilly old town with resort hotels, beautiful mansions and a nice beach promenad with boats and fish restaurants. The natural setting is also beautiful with the national park, the cliffs and the sea surrounding it. There is also a very cool and modern curvy pedestrian bridge right above the shoreline. A few grey and neglect DDR buildings can also be found.
This short trip included some difficulties, since the area was actually very badly organized. At first we were trapped at the ferry terminal, that is 5km away from the city center. No bus went there anymore, so we had to walk without knowing were to walk. After a long walk along a trafficated road, we found a bus stop. Most places don't accept bank cards and we didn't find a single ATM. And we didn't find any exchange office, so without cash you are trapped. So it is highly recommended to carry a lot of cash and to go there by car if possible.
