They have him in custody -- but his name wasn't released. The RCMP are quite tight-lipped about this for now.

4 dead: 2 teachers and his 2 siblings. Very sad. Our hearts and prayers go out to them. Hopefully there won't be any 'copycat' events like this in Canada. ( . . . or anywhere else for that matter.)

Turns out of of the teachers killed went to the same public school as me, a few years ahead of me. I've probably seen him hundreds of times in my life, even if I didn't know him. Crazy.

Good. Murderers deserve to be forever isolated, ignored and forgotten.

Oh, unfortunately it will happen again.

Looking back, there were 2 in 1975, then single attacks in 1978, 1989 (Polytechnique massacre), 1992, 1999, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013, and now 2016.

A little uncomfortable memories of the 1975 St. Pius X High School shooting. I was within eyeshot distance of the perpetrator's home as everything was unfolding. These are always sad events and the question is posed on how to prevent another one from happening. It is the needle in the hay stack, who is the next ticking time bomb?

Crime rates have been falling for the past 20 years. Letting that trend continue is the best hope of reducing the occurrence of tragedies like this.

Oh? My sister attended that school at that time. Huh.

^ Are you referring to the high school in Ottawa? Because there's a St. Pius X school in Regina, but it's an elementary school.

Going back to La Loche, it now seems that the perpetrator was bullied and was acting out on that. He also apparently spared students who had treated him kindly. Have the incidences of root causes such as bullying, mental illness, addictions, etc. also reduced over time along with the crime rate, or does more need to be done to tackle these issues?

^It would have been Ottawa.

More always needs to be done to tackle those issues. Incidences in mental health issues are difficult to get statistical information on because few people actually seek and get the treatment they need. In general, if the person doesn't go seek help or has a good support structure around them to identify issues and help them to get help, there is pretty much nothing done for identification and getting people the counseling and medical attention they often need.

Mental help is a big issue in rural areas and especially acute in remote rural areas. What are neighbours to do when a member of their community is acting strangely and showing signs of anger and outrage? How do they get these people the help they need especially when said people have shut themselves off from the rest of the community and refuses all attempts to reach them?

Regrettably, I would bet that nation-wide school teacher recruitment for isolated northern communities took a hit.

It's a big problem in urban areas as well. I work part time at an addictions recovery house and I am constantly amazed at the number of people of all ages and walks of life who are marginalized because the system and many of the people in it can't or won't give or get help.
