Read in Men's Journal yesterday that Austin and Nashville appear to be the only mid-tier cities that are drawing the 'Creative Class', presumably for cultural issues.

Top 5 Surprisingly Romantic Cities

Top 5 Surprisingly Romantic Cities

3) Austin, Texas: This hippy-dippy Texas town was made for lovers. Live-music lovers, that is. Austin is known as the live-music capital of the U.S., with more than 100 music venues. Love food? Indulge in all the Tex-Mex and barbecue you can inhale. Love water? Take a dip in Barton Springs Pool, a pool fed from natural underground springs that's 68 degrees year round. Love bats? Grab a spot on the Congress Avenue bridge in the summer to watch the world's biggest urban bat colony take flight every night.

America's best cities for hipsters - Austin is #7

America's best cities for hipsters

#7 Austin - The Texas capital has long been a hotbed for live music as well as offbeat types, but the trendsetting locals also scored big points for being tech fluent. The most cutting-edge part of town these days is East Austin, which is bustling with art galleries such as Okay Mountain and bars such as The Liberty, which offers both a beer garden and one of the city’s most lauded food trucks, the Asian-fusion-style East Side King.

i would take that list with a grain of salt. i personally feel that austin is a more hipster-town than san francisco by far. i've never even seen very many hipsters outside of mission, except for maybe hays valley, noe valley and haight-ashbury. and not to mention the fact that's its so freakin expensive.... this town is a rich people's city. i'd personally rank austin in the top 3 and put san francisco somewhere along with philly or at least behind rhode island. and also they forgot to mention new york and los angeles. had those two cities been on the list... i'd put those two at no. 1 and 2 consecutively. those are the two anchoring cities in hipster culture, for the lack of a better term.

i bet san francisco got ranked so high because of techie bias.... a techie doesn't constitute a hipster. that's what you call a nerd.

my list would go something like this...

1. ny
2. la
3. seattle
4. portland
5. austin
6. rhode island
7. san francisco
8. atlanta
9. new orleans
10.??? any city can take this i guess athens, ga or tucson, az?

America's Best Doughnuts

America's Best Doughnuts

By Food & Wine Staff | Food & Wine (New) – Fri, Apr 13, 2012 5:57 PM EDT

Gourdough's; Austin, TX

Operating out of a vintage airstream trailer, Gourdough’s tops fried-to-order doughnuts with everything from brown-sugar-glazed bananas (the Funky Monkey) to fried chicken strips with honey butter (the Mother Clucker). The mobile shop hawks its knife-and-fork doughnuts late into the night to sate the cravings of Austin concert-goers. gourdoughs.com.

The 10 Best Tacos in America

The 10 Best Tacos in America
...Austin, Texas: Tacodeli
According to Rachel Feit of The Austin Chronicle, "tacos are like flavor bombs." For Feit, a memorable taco starts with great fillings, meaning slow-cooked meats stewed with plenty of chiles and spices. But she also believes in the allure of the complexity that comes from adding extra ingredients such as Queso Fresco, cilantro, and, of course, salsa. Narrowing down her favorite taco to just one was a challenge, Feit admits, because "Austin is a taco town, and there are tacos for every occasion, every mood, and every wallet." Ultimately, though, Tacodeli and its three locations rule her heart and her stomach. The Deli Belly (available on Wednesdays and Saturdays only) is a $4 marvel of slow-braised pork belly, sliced then crisped, topped with cilantro and onions on a flour tortilla. Feit recommends crowning the tacos with the mini-chain's emulsified green Doña sauce (a secret recipe she hopes to snag someday). "I always add salsa to my tacos-it's a key to perfect tacos," she says. (4200 N. Lamar; 512-419-1900)

Gourdough's; Austin, TX
I went to Gourdough's for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

WOW. I was blown away. I had the Baby Rattler, which was a doughnut with fudge, Oreos and a huge gummy rattlesnake. I couldn't finish it, it was so rich and filling.

Heh, it is funny how Midland came in first on there. That place is booming! It has like 3.5% unemployment.

Not a week goes by without Austin showing up high on a best-cities list.

When our city can be named a best place for barbeque and burgers one week and then be deemed a haven for vegetarians the next, we must be doing something right. Here's a list of the lists Austin has conquered so far this year.....Click Here for the rest of the article.

That's interesting. I think a lot of those lists should fall under scrutiny after a closer inspection. There's that "most vegetarian friendly" list for example. I'm baffled how Houston and Dallas ranked ahead of San Francisco. If you read that article, they based it off of research they did directly off of the internet. It makes you wonder how many more of those lists had very odd ranking methods.

Needless to say, I'm sure Austin is a vegetarian-friendly city and I'm not surprised either that Austin would make such a list for best city for everyone type of city.
