is there a reason they're doing this right before SXSW? sounds like planned suicide.

Welcome to the first annual South by San Antonio Music Festival. From March 7-13 San Antonio will be flooded with great musicians from around Texas and around the world. Folk, singer/songwriter, indie rock, world beat, alt country, punk and more. 125 bands in three venues over 7 days... if it's original music you'll hear it at SXSA07! For schedule and ticket information, check out the website at www.sxsa07.com. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet the performers - whether in person or online - before then. We are excited about bringing so much great new music to SA and and will keep you posted on new developments!

Actually, they are able to get bands that will be playing SXSW a week before they do. It's a smart idea the bands only have to make one trip to the general area and San Antonio probably wouldn't be able to attract that many on it's own with out SXSW being so close in date. Sounds like a very well and executed idea.

If they want to carve out their own niche and identity, why ride the coattails of sxsw? Why poach their acts?

There's plenty of local music to embrace. Why try to be a me-too?

Because there is a lot of money on those coattails. It does make sense and it is a great chance for bands that are making the long trip to get even more exposure.

Of course, there is the fact that SA is not a great live music town like Austin and attendance might be really low and it may fail miserably.

If not, then let it grow.

I don't think I'd be offended if Austin started doing a Fiesta type event in early April. Is New Orleans upset that Galveston has Mardi Gras celebrations? The pie is big enough for everyone to have a piece.

I say fine. When it's all said and done the reason why people go to these things is for the music. So if there's more music, then fine, more power to them.

As for SXSW, I heard that they're expecting up to 500,000 people this year.

I hope it goes over well. The line up is not bad for a first year thing. However, the majority of artists are from Austin. I think it will improve with time, after all San Antonio was not built in a day.
