I remember seeing a study from the DC area. traffic lights were on cameras, someone would watch during rush hour and manually set the lights based on traffic. if there was no cross street traffic the lights on the heavier used route would be left in green. After the study was complete, the results showed that traffic jams were actually reduced and fuel consumption was equally reduced. Light synchronization did play a positive roll as well.

^ that seems like a pretty obvious outcome.
Don't need a person watching just embed some sensors in the roadways. Make sure to account for the hilariously non standard stopping distances citizens in the city make (stop right at the signal stop line wtf people)

Additional rant:
I was driving westbound on 29a avenue and making a turn to go south on 111st.
I literally waited over ten minutes to make that turn. And this isn't an exaggeration either. I had to wait for 2 separate train crossings (trains in both directions passed twice each) in addition multiple sets of east west traffic and north south traffic before I got to turn left. WHAT THE $#%@!!!who thought this was ok?

^that's the new normal, and not just 29a ave, but 34, 40, 51 avenue, university drive.

And some wonder why we aren't looking to make changes to avoid this problem on the SELRT line.... but it will be fine. The planners have never got anything wrong before...

^ The planners have assured us that raising the line across Whyte Ave would cost between a dollar fifty and 75 billion.

They clearly know what they're talking about!!!!

I recently tried the epark app and have to say this is a pretty aweful app. Who designed this piece of trash?

Whatever cowtown developer made it should have their business shuttered.

Agreed, could be so much more user friendly and intuitive.

Vancouver uses PayByPhone, and it seems relatively painless. Haven't seen/used epark. That bad, huh?

^its not even that it's particularly un-useful, it's just so odd. It feels like an app from 2009.
It's like baby's first app. I'm sure some comp science students at the university could put together a better app in a semester.

I've been out of the app game for a few years now, but from what I can tell it's not a "true" app anyway. It's just a web-app that was stuffed inside an iOS / Android wrapper to put on the store. It's definitely not very intuitive.

The PayByPhone app that all the Impark lots use is great, wish the City could hook up their ePark to that, if they don't plan on re-doing the one they're using from Calgary.

http://globalnews.ca/news/3563253/ed...snow-clearing/

Edmonton finds common, simple solution to snow and ice woes

Awesome! The less sand they uses, the less our city looks like shit during the winter.

Anything that reduces the amount of sand (so rocks basically) the city uses is welcome. The city looks so hideous after winter and all that brown sludge is gross. All the sand just ends up at the side of the roads and not on the driving lanes where needed.

Ambitious in deed. Im a pretty positive guy.

Our fair city has a hard time with the basics of snow removal "now" lol.

Never mind this new adventure thats sounds like it could be Chaos 101.

Grass cutting is a stretch in most areas this year!!

Jack of all trades master of none......COE 2017.

Simple if they ran speed plows earlier during storms. Maybe add some wing plows to the trucks to cut down on the use of 5 trucks in a row.

I'm more enthused about them using something other than sand. I think I would enjoy winter a bit more without the sand turning our roads and sidewalks into lakes and rivers of mud and shit, not to mention all that spring cleanup.

+1
Can't stand the dust, grit that removes road markings, kills grass, destroys windshields, looks like shit, takes forever for the city to clean up..

This could actually end up saving money. Fingers crossed it goes well.

Edmonton showcases Jasper Avenue redevelopment plan

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...207264?cmp=rss

Quote:
Edmontonians can test drive the pedestrian-friendly redevelopment plan for Jasper Avenue by taking a walk between 109th and 115th streets.

That's where the city unveiled its redesign of the avenue Saturday. The demonstration is open until October 31.

Drove down Jasper last night for the first time since the preview was put in, and boy that's going to make a difference for the good. Just in feel and flow of traffic, I don't think I went any quicker than about 45km/h. As soon as the preview section was over, it was instinctively back to 60km/h.

It's going to look great. Jasper needs some serious love from 109 - 117ish, both in infrastructure and development. Can't happen fast enough.
