Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) is seeking
information from Lessors interested in participating in a
project for the leasing of space for Service Canada, which meets
the following criteria.

The office space must be located in the City of Hamilton within
the area bounded by, and including properties fronting on both
sides of each street:

North: Fennell Avenue
East: Upper Ottawa Street
South: Rymal Road
West: Upper Paradise Road

The term of the lease would be five (5) years commencing June
1st, 2009 with options.

The premises offered must have approximately 744 usable square
metres of contiguous office space
. The total space offered shall
be located on the ground floor. Two (2) parking spaces are
required.

---
That's about 2,500 sq ft. Wonder what it could be? On the mountain. They are also looking for double the space in Stoney Creek too. Sounds like retail space.

can't be retail. The city would never allow retail to happen with 2 parking spaces.
200 maybe. And definitely with 2,000.

Service Canada currently has a kiosk at Upper James and Rymal (Fortino's Plaza). The lease must be up which is why an RFP has gone out - or maybe they are looking for more space.

I think Fortinos on Upper James wants to expand. So maybe they didn't renew Service Canada and is waiting for them to move out so Fortinos can expand.

The Fortinos on Upper James is new-ish but doesn't have the new store format, no cafe, no wine, no flower shop, no Asian market, no deli and coffee, etc. They'll probably do what they did with the Fortinos by Limeridge Mall to the one at Upper James.

That's exactly what it is--Service Canada is moving and needs new space--it's a garden-variety federal government RFP.

Has anyone heard any more about who is moving into the top floors of Stelco Tower? RTH had mentioned a while back that sources of his were saying the lease was nearly finalized for an unnamed new major tenant for those floors.

Sure enough it's a bank......

"Everyone knows the rust-coloured highrise at King and James as the Stelco Tower, but by 2004 the struggling steelmaker had finished moving out. And that left the top 10 floors of the tower empty.

So Yale Properties -- owners of the Jackson Square retail and office complex -- shut off the bank of express elevators that run from floors 15 to 24.

But now they're switching them back on. RBC Dominion Securities is in the midst of a $2-million retrofit of the 15th floor.

The investment firm has had about two-thirds of the ninth floor for about a decade, but was looking to expand.

Scott MacKinnon, vice-president and branch manager, says they considered locations in Stoney Creek and Ancaster, as they have clients and staff living in both areas.

"But that's why downtown is perfect. It's in the centre of everything."

RBC will have the 15th floor to itself, with a staff of about 65, great views all around.

The floor will also be home to an expanded private banking centre, which serves clients of high net worth, the kind who never stand in line.

Yale Properties says it has an offer in hand for the soon-to-be-vacated ninth-floor space."

Awesome. I have a feeling that Stelco tower will be full again in 5-10 years, especially if LRT and increased GO service happen.

Wouldn't the old Woolworth's building on King Street between James and Hughson make a great spot for a F'rtino's or other supermarket? What do you think? And how do we get supermarkets thinking about it?

Not really. The ground floor of the building is full right now, and it's all set up for office/small retail. I think the current Delta Bingo hall/old Kresge's Department store is better suited.

Good Idea Matt,
Never thought of that location because it is occupied. The other one came to mind because I thought it was empty. The old Kresge would be a great spot, it has two entrances too which would be great for a supermarket.

Dominion, argh I can't stand Dominion. Overpriced in the suburbs and way over priced in the downtown (College Park, Front Street, Liberty Village). If I'm going to pay a premium I want items that are premium, not ones that are readily available at other neighbouring grocery stores for less........

I'd vote for a Fortinos.

Sobey's would be nice, and they have been good with scaling to match neighbourhoods.

Dominion does suck, but at this point I'd take any of them downtown.
