WTF is it with the whole Ye Olde Shoppe spellinge crappe and some stores... meh.

To be fair, if they're gonna do it properly and be proper affineurs &c. that would be great... IIRC, there are a couple of decent cheese stalls in the farmers market, and it'll be great to have more good quality victuallers in the city.

Out of interest, does anyone have a line on a good butcher (ideally with locally produced meats, preferably antibiotic-free, and all that)?

We love Fenwood Farm for their turkey goodness, but it's a bit of a schlep to get out there and back for regular stockups of smaller supplies...

Try Cumbraes in Dundas. Deal only in top quality local meats, best butcher in town.

Ditto Cumbrae's. There's Morden's as well, but probably also a schlep for you.

I'm going to check these guys out for brunch. Full disclosure: it's run by an acquaintance of mine and I wish them success. The neighbourhood could use it.

From facebook:

Subject: What's new at the Heart of the Hammer Cafe?

Hello friends! I just thought I'd update you on a few of the exciting things going on at our favourite local hangout:
* Soups on! Come on in for lunch. We are featuring a different soup each day and you can pair it with a sandwich or bagel of your choice.
* Sunday brunch. Bring in your friends or family for crepes and a specialty coffee.
* Artists. We are booking musicians (Thursdays) and visual artists (monthly). If you are an artist - or know one - that would be interested, please contact me at heartofthehammercafe@yahoo.ca

Hope to see you soon!

Kinda sad to see Philthy close, have a lot of memories there. Blowing downstairs was fun being tipsy haha.

Game over for Philthy McNasty’s

January 15, 2010
Lisa Grace Marr
The Hamilton Spectator
http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/705948

The lights are still on, the dishes and ketchup are still on the table, but Philthy McNasty’s on Upper James is closed for good.

Or at least for now.

“It’s a casualty of the economy, I’m afraid,” said Jeff White, founder of the chain, which has merged with the Pegasus Group.

“We had a good run in Hamilton. Then there was the (shutdowns) at Dofasco and (U.S. Steel), the students didn’t return this year like they usually do and the closure of the Upper James Cinemas — that really hurt,” he said.

The restaurant and sports bar was a Mountain fixture for more than a decade.

In its heyday, before the non-smoking bylaw kicked in, White said it had 90 staff and a bank of 15 pool tables in the basement, and the place was hopping.

When it closed this week, the number of staff had dropped to about 40, including managers — all great people, he said.

But the place was not just a big party spot — it was a big spot, period.

“It’s a 13,000-square-foot facility,” White said. “It’s not the mid-’90s anymore. I think it’s time to slim down the size” of sports bars.

White, originally from Burlington, hasn’t ruled out returning to the Hamilton market.

Philthy’s just opened a new eatery in Oakville, after closing another location a year and a half ago. It now has five locations listed on its website, including others in Burlington, Waterloo, Ottawa and Toronto.

Hamilton is still a great market and it has potential, White said.

“Once this economy turns around, Hamilton is No. 1 on my list to come back to.”

My DH went to the new Thai place in Dundas that has opened up in the old Deluxe restaurant space. He loved it. Says they've done a beautiful job. It was packed at the time, which isn't surprising. There's a dearth of decent places to eat in Dundas.

Went (for a 2nd visit) to Koosh over the weekend.

Really enjoyed it. Friendly service, intimate. Great food.

And the Koosh Bloody Caesar with horseradish and a splash of beer was a crowd pleaser.

Augusta House Gastropub is now open across from the Pheasant. Had lunch there today, not bad. Probably the most expensive option on Augusta.

Congratulations to Incognito (my favourite downtown restaurant) for winning the 2010 Hamilton Tourism award for Hamilton's restaurant of the year!

Haha yes but dreaming and having a fry or two doesn't hurt.

My favourite fries was from Hutch's and the chip wagon at Upper James and Mohawk by No Frills.

How about a really good fish n chips place other than recommending Hutch's? I've heard of a few.

The chip wagon at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Sherman is pretty good. Around lunch time there is always a line up. Seems to be a favorite of city workers.

Golden Fish and Chips on Upper Gage is excellent. They also have a location on Mohawk W.
