I just caught this: http://blackburnnews.com/chatham/cha...1-widening-ck/

The title should explain itself.

Doesn't it seem redundant to build a tension cable barrier just to replace it with a concrete one a few years later?

6 lanes would be nice here too. Lots of truck traffic so divers would really benefit from a lane that is truck-restricted

"Interim solution" they call it.

Man these people ask for so little... They should ask for a 3rd lane in each direction on top of that. Once Gordie Howe Bridge is up and running, the demand justifies it.

1 dead after Highway 401 bus crash, 5 remain in hospital

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa...ayor-1.4691839

Quote:
One man has died and five people remain in hospital after a tour bus carrying dozens of passengers crashed into a rock cut along Highway 401 near Prescott, Ont., on Monday afternoon.
Quote:
The mayor of Prescott is calling for the two-lane stretch of Highway 401 in the area to be expanded to three lanes.
Quote:
Brett Todd told CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning on Tuesday it's a "depressingly familiar" story.

"This is the third significant accident on that stretch of the 401 in a month, and it follows of course on the heels of other significant accidents in January, in late November, last summer," he said.
Just for reference sake, according to the 2016 data provided by the MTO, the 401 is about 50% busier between Brockville and the 416 than it is between Chatham and Tilbury:

Brockville to Prescott AADT: 35,800

Tilbury to Chatham AADT: 21,900

So now that we have the PCs as the ruling party, do you think the provincial government may change up some of the planned / proposed projects?

Maybe some more 401 widening? Or perhaps cutbacks to save $?

The 400 extension will probably be put on hold again, seeing as how Northern Ontario is almost useless to the government.

On the other hand, PC might extend 417 through Upper Ottawa Valley. It’s very unlikely, but I’m not surprised either, if the government twins 17 all the way to Sturgeon Falls.

As for 69, again it’s unlikely, but I’m not surprised either, if they now start the twinning from the south end (Nobel) instead.

As for 17 in Kenora, lol PC will have to wait for Freedom Road to be done first.

Obviously, if all of the above does take place, that’s the best case scenario. Worst case scenario, I hope, is that PC simply pauses the project till they get voted out in 4 years.

I'm talking about strictly the 401 here, what this thread is about.

Maybe start a general Ontario highways thread on SSP? I made one on the Urban Toronto site if interested: https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/thread...cussion.12233/

from the PC platform
https://www.ontariopc.ca/plan_for_the_people

Actively explore potential for high-speed rail and highway projects including the potential six-laning of Highway 401 to the 416 between Toronto and Ottawa. Also, complete the environmental assessment for the GTA West Corridor, invest in increasing safety on the 401 West and four-lane Highway 17 in eastern Ontario and Highway 3 in Southwestern Ontario.

Highway Improvement Plan - $20 million for studies/401 improvements, $5 million per year for Highways 3 and 17 amortized over 50 years once completed.

Interesting that it doesn’t look like a cluster mess from the bird eye view

An up to date view of the 401 expansion through Mississauga. This view looks east from Creditview Road, and was taken by me last evening:

seems to be something off with those Mavis Rd signs - the one marks 1km and then right after the exit?

^ I shot this with a telephoto lens. the Mavis Road overpass is about 2km away from where I was standing. They may have rounded the distance on the sign up a little bit, but it's probably closer to 1km from that sign to the bullnose of the off-ramp then it looks in the photo.

OPP GTA closed 401E around Winston Churchill Blvd in Mississauga due to fatality. Please plan your route accordingly.

The Toronto Region Board of Trade is calling for a vertical expansion of Highway 401 near Toronto Pearson International Airport to help alleviate gridlock.

https://www.680news.com/2018/06/26/h...k-board-trade/

-----

At the 427 for instance, the 401 goes from 18 to 10 lanes (and just 8 under the 427) as the collector lanes end. If a new viaduct was built to extend the collector lanes between Highways 427 and 409, you would eliminate this bottleneck.
