Thanks.

*****

Tried out OLIO today. It's less than a block from my place, so I walked. Greatly underestimated the difficulty of carrying a pizza box in gusty winds - but made it home alright.

OLIO is located where Stogger's Pizza used to be. Stogger's was generic North American-style pizza - medium crust, the usual toppings. OLIO isn't a Piatto or anything, but it is somewhere in between generic delivery and truly delicious, creative pizza.

Today I went with the pulled pork and caramelized onion pizza.

It's in the little green building.

Has a lovely view of Long's Hill.

And the pizza is great!

Yeah. I didn't choose it (got the pre-determined toppings for that particular one), but gave it a try. It's actually really good!

No, just a bad picture it seems - it wasn't unusually greasy at all. I'm not sure why it looks wet.

That was my concern. It looks like it's sitting in a pile of grease. I'll let the corn pass, because it's 2018 and whatnot.

FWIW, my wife raved about Piatto here in Moncton so I tried my hand at one of their signature pizzas and it turned out pretty well!

That's prosciutto, goat cheese, carmelized pear and balsamic reduction.

^ Piatto is great. My only issue is the long wait times to get a table

That Pizza with corn looks disgusting but if you say it was good I'm sure it was. This is my go-to pizza place in Toronto's East side.

Descendant Pizza

Descendant Pizza charts out unchartered territory as the city's first Detroit-style pizzeria. A former chef at Pizzeria Libretto and Danforth Pizza House , Christopher Getchell brought the concept to Toronto, which has already garnered an overwhelmingly positive response. Since the grand opening, pies have sold out almost daily.

What is Detroit-style pizza? Getchell cringes at the Pizza Hut comparisons, though he concedes some similarities. Truth be told, that off-the-cuff assessment doesn't do Descendant justice. Two-day proofed dough is set into oil-slicked pans, then loaded with toppings upon order.

Ooh, that looks good. I love the sauce on top. Not a huge fan of pepperoni but, obviously, quite used to it on pizza.

Is that why Pizza Hut crusts are so greasy? I've never been a fan.

The crust does kind of have that Pizza Hut flavour which is maybe why I like it.

Pizza Hut has been doing something similar for decades now. The Cheese sticks are just garlic bread with cheese made on pizza dough. They usually come with marinara dipping sauce.

FINAL-FUCKING-LY you can get authentic Bosnian food in St. John's, Bosniak family straight out of Sarajevo. I haven't had cevapi since I lived in Winnipeg.

It's just down the street from me, right next to the neighbourhood local (I went first thing this morning at 11 a.m. and there were already drunks from the bar waiting to order, ).

I got the Balkan burger, which is just pljeskavica packaged as a burger, and cevapi. It's way too much food but this is a craving I've been waiting since 2012 to satisfy.

Video Link

It's just off Merrymeeting on Cookstown Road.

He commented on my tattoo of our tricolour and said that's why he chose green and pink for Balkan Kitchen, but he didn't want to add the white because he didn't want it to be completely with our flag in case that turns some people away.

They had lots of pictures of Sarajevo, Mostar, Trebinje, etc. around the restaurant. I noticed that all of the ones of Sarajevo included at least one Roman Catholic church. Very cute. They're smart!

And then... voila... if you've never had it in your city, go get it now.

It's definitely a Bosnian restaurant, and/but in a small city like ours, you get the works of the Balkans coming together at any possible congregation point. LOVELY place and people.

^ The Bosnian restaurant needs to work a bit on the presentation. I have no doubt it tastes good, but looks a little like week old leftovers.

edit: Not meaning to be too negative, it's fantastic that SJs food scene has evolved to have so much more variety now, it's of great benefit for life in the city.

I have an on-going list of about 300-400 restaurants, bars, and cafes in Toronto that I like or that I would like to try. And in honour of the late Anthony Bourdain, I've been inspired to pick out some of my favourite places to eat that I'd take someone if they were here on a layover for a few days: (with lazy descriptions included)

Pinky's - cool Vietnamese place:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/p...a-phe-toronto/

Oddseoul - cool Korean-Philadelphian place:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/oddseoul-toronto/

Patois - cool Chinese-Jamaican place:

http://www.postcity.com/Eat-Shop-Do/...ibbean-mashup/

Rhum Corner - nice little Haitian place from Jen Agg of Black Hoof fame:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/rhum-corner-toronto/

Hanmoto - chill late-night Japanese place:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/hanmoto-toronto/

Imanishi - cozy place for Japanese home-style cooking:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/i...tchen-toronto/

La Palma - higher-end, but really good classic Italian fare:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/la-palma-toronto/

Ryu's Noodle Bar - best ramen I've had outside of Japan (and still better than a lot of the ramen I've had in Japan):

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/r...e-bar-toronto/

Bombay Chowpatty - Mumbai streetfood staples inside a Bollywood video store:

Bar Raval - exceptional food in a stunning space:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/bar-raval-toronto/

Bar Isabel - it's good:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/bar-isabel-toronto/

Pray Tell - great cocktails, inventive snacks, and a lovely space:

https://www.blogto.com/bars/pray-tell-toronto/

Pai - best Thai place:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/pai-toronto/

Kanpai - Taiwanese snack bar:

http://www.kanpaisnackbar.com/

Pizzeria Libretto - still the best pizza around:

El Trompo - cheap, straightforward, good traditional tacos - and a nice patio too:

https://www.yelp.ca/biz/el-trompo-taco-bar-toronto

Allwyn's - my favourite for classic Jamaican takeout, in an oddly-located strip mall on the North York-Scarborough border:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/a...akery-toronto/

El Gordo Market - not quite a restaurant, but a rotating assortment of small, mostly Latin American, mostly good food stalls in Kensington:

https://www.blogto.com/restaurants/tito-rons-toronto/

Downsview Merchant's Market - a sprawling maze of a market, with a classically Torontonian mix of all sorts of different food:

Wow, great list Monkey. I haven't heard of half of those places but they all look worth checking out. I'm going to give Patios a try this weekend.
