I would love this tower so much, if it wasnt for that damn exuse for a spire. Other than that the tower looks pretty good.

@Sandy : again, I love your photos.
I didn't dare to go inside the building like you did.

My impression after seeing the completed building : I was an admirer of it before, I love it even more now.
It's not very tall nor exuberant, but it's distinctive and sophisticated. From the street, the facade catches the attention in a subtle way unlike Hearst, that shows off, or BofA, that blends too much in its environment.
After seeing the photos, I was skeptical about the crown, but it functions perfectly in reality.
I wish the spire was lit up at night. That's my only regret.

And, also, it's so magnificent that it would have desserved to gain more prominence with an extra 20 floors or so.

3 'dull finish deprives the facades of an enlivening play of light and shadow'? again, the focus seems to be TOO much on what it LOOKS LIKE. whereas the true test of architecture comes when you walk into a building.
4 aesthetically, i love this building because it's so simple from afar, yet up close it reveals itself to be wonderfully intricate, honest, and expressive. and this play of light and shadow that the NYT's critic says is lacking perhaps should pay a visit INSIDE the building where the play of light shadow are actually important.

... god, it's no wonder why so many people prefer buildings like empire state or chrysler and so on over WONDERFUL works of architecture like this or seagram and so on; they see architecture only from the standpoint of does it look good in the skyline. but isn't the fundamental goal of architecture to create beautiful SPACE, not tall shapes that look pretty? buildings are machines for inhabiting, and attention should be given solely to creating a great space for inhabiting and not creating something that looks good. i thought this pomo way of thinking was past us?

i don't know that critic, but he sounds like someone who would be appalled by exposed concrete.

An interesting article in Time Magazine about Renzo Piano.
Here's what it says about the NYTimes Tower :

Quote:
But not everything Piano touches turns out as nicely. In pre-construction models, his New York Times headquarters looked delicate almost to the point of evanescent--quite a trick for a Manhattan skyscraper. But in the execution, the ceramic rods Piano devised to screen the glass walls are bulky, and the battleship gray exterior looks anything but weightless.

I think if the spire was removed...the building would be perfect.

The indoor garden is amazing!

The warmth exuded by the lobby at night is a very welcome sight while walking along the porno theatres and shitty tourist shops on Eight ave. I walked past it for the first time a week ago and was blown away with how stunning, yet refined the lobby and first floor spaces looked.

Love this tower! A modernist approach to aesthetically appropriate functional elements. Beautiful attention to detail. The spire works in the context of the whole. Viva Piano!

The tower has grown on me in recent months. I neither like it too much, nor dislike it like I once did. Honestly, the main reason I don't like it as much as I could is the spire. I think the tower would be better off without it. It just screams for attention without really adding anything to the building aesthetically.

I always liked this tower and I think that the spire looks nice, even if it does cheat. Without the spire it would look bland and incomplete. Reminds me of a modern version of the N. Twin Tower.

Come on... I haven't seen this building in person, but it's obvious from the professional photos in this thread that this is just a really bad picture. The exposure and white balance are way off, and the camera didn't have enough resolution to actually capture the horizontal rods, so they got blurred into muck. You can see the rods starting to disappear into blur in some of Fabb's photos (which are good!)

Anyway, this building looks great
