An early remote vacuum cleaner that has somehow found its way onto the roof?

If that is the case you can all come to my wake. I'll leave word for an open bar.

By the way, what is this?

p.s. I love the telephone booth.

Looks like skylight to me. Perhaps that extra large garage is underneath.

The Phone Booth

I think we all love the phone booth. Funny how something so ubiquitous not so long ago is now so rare.

Maybe it served other purposes than just placing calls. A fast elevator-style drop to lower floors? You gotta imagine there were a fair number of Black-Ops Company Men who visited Lookout Mountain over the years.

It's a bit odd that the phone booth is missing in the photo I posted from the late 70s/early 80s.

unknown

...maybe malumont is on to something.

Car through house. Coronado Terrace in the Echo Park area 1951.

I don't think this guy is having a very good day.

One question: Is that thing in the yard one of those citywide incinerators or a butt-ugly outdoor grill?

If you look, the skylight isn't there either.

I hate getting out of place. What I meant was, in the 70's shot of the Lab, neither the phone booth nor the skylight are in that parking lot.

It's hard to tell from the 70s/80s shot, but it looks like a blue tarp on the ground where the skylight would be.

The tarp could explain the skylights elevated base. The surface probably got flooded during hard rain and water was leaking in. The tarp was used until the skylight was "modernized." Because of its shape, it's most likely plexiglass and not part of the original structure.
Just assuming.

Let me briefly return to the Alvarado Terrace area.

The First Church of Christ, Scientist built in 1912 anchors the southwestern end of Alvarado Terrace at Alvarado Street & Hoover Street.

high-rise apartment building is visible down the street.

Now for the 'noirish' aspect of this post.

In 1971 Jim Jones' People's Temple established urban congregations in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles the Jim Jones' People's Temple inhabited the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Alvarado Terrace from 1971 to 1977.

The Los Angeles branch was the larger of the two. It's weekly offering was $15,000 to $25,000 compared to San Francisco's $8,000 to $12,000.
Jim Jones preached here every two weeks. A line of buses filled with members and Jim Jones himself would drive down from the small headquarter church in Ukiah CA and the San Francisco church.

When the San Francisco church became the People's Temple headquarters (previously it was in tiny Ukiah CA)
many of the Los Angeles members eventually moved to the San Francisco area.

As we all know, the members of the People's Temple eventually committed mass suicide in Guyana in 1978.
918 members died, including 276 children after drinking cyanide laced grape kool-aid

I've obviously skipped over many details. Here is a link to fill in the blanks.

Yep, I just found me a new neighborhood to explore! Missed this area utterly when I actually lived and worked in the area 14 years ago! How could I have done that?

The church on Alvarado Terrace is beautiful. I especially admire the photo of the interior. Is this interior still intact? It is very imposing.

Clifton's Brookdale metal facade lifted today

The unveiling happened today: http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/o...9bb2963f4.html

I wonder why the windows were bricked up in the first place? Horribly done too.

OK..I don't want you to think I'm obsessed with Alvarado Terrace but I just wanted to point out these four interesting homes that surround
the old First Church of Christ, Scientist.

below: I've placed arrows on the four homes.

google street view

Moving left to right.

#1 1515 South Hoover Street built in 1905.

#2 1458 Alvarado Terrace. I'm confused by that ornate area that resembles a mirror.

#3 The Henderson House at 1421 Alvarado Terrace.

http://www.travelinlocal.com/alvarad...strict-part-3/

#4 1400 Alvarado Terrace built in 1905 (this one I posted once before)
This craftsman bungalow was built as a honeymoon cottage for Grace Powers by her father who lived across the street.

I think it's safe to say that the interior is still intact austlar1.

below: Here are two snapshots of the interior downloaded on flickr in 2010.
