Picking a name for new SeaBus was a 'Breeze'

Vancouver SunFebruary 6, 2009 12:01 PM

METRO VANCOUVER -- The third SeaBus vessel, expected to go into service this fall, is no longer “The Third SeaBus”. TransLink announced Friday the “Burrard Pacific Breeze” has been chosen as the winning name in the Name The SeaBus Contest.

The name was submitted by Robert Waldman, an employee at Hastings Park Racecourse, TransLink said in a press release. “It was a no-brainer,” he said. “B.C. is Canada’s Pacific province, and ‘breeze’ suggests the tropical [influenced] weather we often get around here.”

Burrard Pacific Breeze was picked out of more than 1,200 submissions during the entry period last fall. The Mayors of West Vancouver, North Vancouver District and North Vancouver City decided on a short list of six entries and members of the TransLink Online Advisory Panel (www.translinklistens.bc.ca) voted on the winner.

“It’s important for a vessel to have a name that gives an image of the area it serves,” says TransLink CEO Tom Prendergast, “especially when we can expect it to serve us for many decades to come. Burrard Pacific Breeze does just that.”

The Mayors of West Vancouver, North Vancouver District and North Vancouver City decided on a short list of six entries and members of the TransLink Online Advisory Panel (www.translinklistens.bc.ca) voted on the winner.

Waldman will get to take part in the official launching and christening ceremonies and ride on the inaugural voyage of the Burrard Pacific Breeze this fall.

When the Burrard Pacific Breeze initially goes into service, the other two SeaBuses, Burrard Otter and Burrard Beaver, will take turns getting a full refit.

Nice! I hope they're able to make it as dingy as the other two before the games start.

I suggested Burrard Harbour Seal.

I guess that didn't get the ol' Evinrude crankin'.

Wow. What a terrible name. Was it selected by the same committee that picked "the best place on earth"?

i voted for Burrard Heron. Pacific Breeze sounds like it should be a BC Ferries vessel...

Horrible name. Though at least it isn't the Canada First Nations Spirit Sea Bus or something.

Has anyone mentioned whether three seabuses will mean more service during the evening and weekends? I'm concerned this will just mean North Van buses won't bother trying to connect with the seabus on time and we'll end up with worse service overall.

^i don't think thats going to be a problem for the first year or so considering that as soon as the 3rd SeaBus comes in service, they are going to pull one of the existing two off active duty for retrofits and renovations. and when that one comes back on active duty, they are going to pull the second one off duty and do the same.

Where exactly is this third Seabus, by the way? Any pictures of it being built?

^its invisible....

its being built at the Vitoria Shipyards Co. so, perhaps some of our Victorian friends can go swing down Admirals Road and see if they can snap off a few photos for us?

From the Buzzer blog...

Heads up: third SeaBus photo opp

One of the older SeaBuses out on the water, awaiting the arrival of its new friend the Pacific Breeze!
Transit photography fans: there will likely be a photo opp for the third SeaBus tomorrow!

Basically, a large portion of the Burrard Pacific Breeze will be taken by barge from a warehouse in North Vancouver to Victoria Shipyards in Victoria, where construction will be completed.

You should recognize it fairly easily — it’s the aluminum shell of the passenger house.

The departure is dependent on tides and currents, so I don’t have an exact time yet—I’ll keep you posted once I get that information. But once it departs, feel free to head out to the Lions Gate Bridge and watch for it.

I won’t be able to make it out, so if you do get some shots, it would be great if I could share them on the blog! Send them to the Buzzer’s email and let me know how you’d like to be credited.

It will require an engine, painting, furnishing, safety equipment, electrical, etc.

If you read the above post, it is just the shell.
