Art Moderne House Tour

Art Moderne Houses in Hamilton and Burlington

There is a small family of Art Moderne houses in Hamilton and Burlington which were built between 1936 and 1939. It is likely that half of them—Lounsbury House, Hambly House, and Mapes House—were designed by the same person: Edward Glass, an unknown designer from Hamilton, Ontario, who was not a registered architect. Glass worked as a shoe clerk at Seigel's in East Hamilton before he was hired to design the Lounsbury House, a large 2.5 storey, ship-like building in Burlington. The Hamilton-Burlington cluster of six Art Moderne houses is unusual in Ontario: even Toronto has only one Art Moderne house.
