You're thinking of Mt. Baker. From the top of Mt. Baker you'd theoretically be able to see anything in the Vancouver/Victoria/Bellingham area.

Years ago I was on a boat just off of Sidney (northern part of Greater Victoria) and I was indeed able to see Mt. Rainier in the distance. I was quite impressed (I've been on a small boat like that just a handful of times in my life) but the other folks on board just took it for granted.

This picture of Victoria was taken from the mountains above Port Angeles, Washington (most of Victoria is actually out of frame to the right but you can still make out a few residential highrise buildings in Vic West and on the western side of James Bay):

For what it's worth, you can see Assumption Place (20 stories) and the Aliant Tower (elevation 350 feet) in Moncton from the top of Caledonia Mountain (elevation about 1200 feet). This is about 40 km south of the city.

You can't see Halifax very far. Our tallest is Fenwick Tower (32 Floors, ~100m) and thanks to the hills and ocean nobody really knows.

I live in Bedford and can see Fenwick from my house which is about 11 km away but I'm sure by sea on a calm day it might push 30km or more.

having never been to seattle, I can't say for sure...but from the looks of that picture, Mt Rainier looks like it'd be mighty hard to miss.

Here's one from the Canadian Skylines thread showing Mt Baker from Vancouver.

On the horizon, on the left, there is a lump of rock. Pan over right a little and you see a white smear. That's a grain elevator. From 56 kilometres away.

From the Sleeping Giant's head, 27 km away:

Mount McKay and the power plant

Like the above, but a little further out; you can also see Port Arthur in this one

Beautiful shot of Mount McKay and the power plant under some crepuscular rays

The vertical line drawn from the top say point T of the building of height h towards the centre, say O of earth measures (R+h), where R is radius of earth. Neglecting viewer's height, let the tangent drawn from viewer's location, say point L to the surface of earth in such a way that it touches the top of the building measure X. Then the triangle LTO is aright triangle with right angle at L and hypotenuse OT and one side LT = X. Let the angle LOT be theta. It is obvious that if the viewers goes beyond L the building will not be visible. Let the location point of the building be B. We know that TO meets earth at B. We are supposed to find out the the distance BL measured on teh surface of earth. We know that
BL = R*theta and tan (theta) is given by

tan (theta) = LT/OL = sq rt[OT^2 - OL^2] / OL where OL = R and OT = R+h, So
tan (theta) = sq rt[(R+h)^2 - R^2] / R or = sq rt[{1 + (h/R)}^2 - 1] = sq rt [2h/R] neglecting higher powers of (h/R).

h for a 30 story building can be estimated as (10 feet)*30 =my b 300 ft = (300*12*2.54)/100 m = 91.44 m or say 91 m

R = 6.37*10^6 m
tan (theta) = [sq rt(2*91/6.37)]*10 ^-3 = 5.345*10^-3 =
or theta = 5.345*10^-3 rad

BL = (5.345*10^-3)*(6.37*10^6) = 34049 m = 34 km
whats the " ^ "suppost to represent? ... i can't beleave how confused i have been left with some basic trig blah i need a refresher

^ means "to the power of", 10^3 is 10³ -- ten to the power of three (or ten cubed).

Looks like you are #1 east of the city, right?

The furthest I've seen Wpg skyline from is on #3 to the southwest (near Sanford). I checked on Google maps and to my surprise, it's also 16 miles.

This is the furthest I've photographed Ottawa's skyline from - King Mountain in Gatineau Park (Oct 2006).

When you are traveling west on the #1 from Ontario, you can start to see the buildings at portage and Main shortly after the Trans-Canada veers northwest towards Winnipeg as you approach the turn-off to Steinbach. According to Google Maps the distance is about 45km.

^ I've seen that too, now that I think of it.

When I lived in Regina I made many a trip from my parent's place in SW Manitoba, and I could see Regina's buildings from highway 6 in the south.. can't remember where it was exactly but it was quite far.

Entering Toronto from Highway 10 south of Orangeville, you can see the Toronto skyline very well from the big hill you descend around Forks of the Credit. I believe that would be about 50km or so from downtown.

Driving back east last November, we could see the lights from the Regina skyline just as we were leaving Moosejaw, which is about 70km.
