I'm neither a complainer or an admirer, but I do like the square outlines from top to bottom especially if they stay pronounced enough to see from a distance. My distraction is the bump out section. Like some who don't like notches, I don't like these. Since we are getting a plethora of non rectangular flat top highrises down the pike, what the heck, we can absorb one more I suppose. I think this is another one that we may up liking once its up.
Personally I agree with MichaelB about infill, especially if we lose anymore meaningful establishments to make way. The consolation would be meaningful ground floor retail space. Like Kevin and I stated many years ago, the lack of density back then, 2010s, made it easy to see each building from all angles, from just about anywhere. Not that there was really much downtown to showcase 10 years ago. And I also agree with We vs us that something a bit more attractive would have been nicer for that site. But I think I'm going to be ok with it, perhaps even more.

I hope that's the case, and I'm on your side on this. If the metal cladding ends up being pretty prominent, then I think this will look pretty good. but you never know how things will translate from render to real life.

Someone's comments on the black window mullions with the dark blue facade swayed me. I think it'll look alright. The "crown" is a little underwhelming, but not every building can be the Frost Bank Tower.

This is actually one of the few new buildings that did a good job hiding its parking garage. just saying.

The protected walkway surrounding the building is up, but I don't think they have actually started demo on the building. Probably next week.

Speaking of demo, I know this is a little off topic except that it's next door to this project, but what are they doing to the old Ginger Man location on Lavaca? They've demoe'd everything except the facade.

Not off topic a bit--I hear it will be staging area for the Parsley building for at least 18 mos.

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer. Plus, that's a nice view in the background there. Nice view of the Hotel ZaZa and 300 West Sixth. Plus, I'm pretty sure 6 X Guadalupe will tower over that scene.

I'm going back to wishing they at least kept the facade of the old building....it would add some interest to the new building and I feel like the brick actually would go well with the black steel industrial-looking mullions of the new design. Oh well.

Yeah, it bums me out that I didn't go for some pics, particularly at night like the one above. I wish they'd redevelop the Lavaca Plaza across West 5th from The Plaza if they're looking for properties in that area to redevelop. I also wish the Chase Bank Tower's garage could go away. That place always gives me the willies with all of the security cameras around - like I'm not allowed to walk by it. I'd like to see someone buy the Chase Bank Tower, knock down the garage, and redevelop that lot with another tower with both buildings sharing underground parking.

I understand the dislike for this project in the context of the Warehouse District disappearing rather quickly. But when considering this project alone and not it's location, I have to say it's nice to get a rectangle as opposed to all the triangles, wedges and sails we have been seeing.

I'll like this tower, me thinks, but still, very ugh about the demo of that old brick beauty.

I wonder what happens to all of the bricks in a case like this. My dad used to gather them out of the creeks in downtown 25 to 30 years ago. I hope those aren't destined for the landfill.

When the Main Street Mall in downtown Poughkeepsie was torn down, someone took the stone and brick debris, trucked it 50 miles north and built a medieval looking castle out of it. Its called Wing's Castle outside Millbrook, NY. The nine pane windows, and railing came of a warehouse being torn down, and all of the rock came from the walls and streets of the mall. The guy that built this huge complex. built it by hand over the course of about 20 years but died before the entire complex was finished. His son and widow are currently finishing where he left off. Its been featured on several shows including American Pickers. If you want to see something amazing built from rubble, check out the photos in the link below. In case anyone is interested, this part on NY is my old stomping grounds.
