Could be interesting, hope it doesn't catch to many plastic bags blowing in the wind.

That's better than 90% of the public art in this city right now.

Video on the art piece on the Bow by Montgomery. Interesting philosophy behind it.

Calgary Contemporary Art Gallery

It's good to see this moving ahead.

“Calgary is the only major North American city of its size that does not have a cultural facility dedicated to modern and contemporary art,” he says.

Housed in the Centennial Planetarium, the proposed new gallery will be developed in various stages. The first, Temporary Contemporary, is being planned as a 7,000-square-foot pop-up space scheduled to open in Fall 2016.

North end of the new Enmax park on the east side of the Elbow at the stampede grounds.

I too was shocked a couple of weeks ago when I saw tweets about it going up and it wasn't horse/bull/cowboy related at all!

It's still fish, which is right behind bull and horse in terms of art subject popularity.

Either way, Im not the biggest fan of this. Just looks kind of crappy to me. The best public art is either interactive in some way or is visually interesting. This is just kind of whatever.

I agree. It looks kinda cheap and crappy to me. The colours make it even worse looking. Reminds me of something you'd see on a playground more than an art piece.

Anything on the Stampede grounds is pretty much a complete write off though when we're talking about public art.

Edit: I think it would be fun to try and submit an idea to the board that chooses this stuff with a hidden meaning. Like make it over the top cowboy crap but hide a dirty image in it when seen from certain angles. Like a couple cowboys around a fire with one kneeling and one standing. From head on it looks innocent but when seen from the side the kneeling one is blowing the other cowboy.

I've had that general idea of pranking the Stampede board for awhile but that specific image just came to me now.

Glow

Anyone make it out to Glow yet? Calgary's inaugural winter light festival - link

Most of the exhibits were interactive - which is good. And most were pretty good, though some missed a bit ...

Spinning Olympic plaza

More than meets the eye

Overseers at the Chophouse

Giant bunnies

And my favourite - constellations.
Old street lamps were laid out on the ground and then they were lit up in a manner that when viewed through telescopes against a convex mirror reveling various heavenly constellations ...

Overall it was pretty good - and there was a decent amount of visitors (though it did seem busier Friday night)

I saw those spinning triangles in Ottawa when we were there over Christmas. Pretty cool, but we were also hella wasted playing with them.
