quick disclaimer: Some of these photos focus on graffiti, abandonment and other scenes that most consider “ugly.” I can’t say why I’ve taken so many of these types of shots except that I find them more interesting as far as subject matter goes. It’s just a personal preference I guess, but I’ve always associated grit with urbanity, and I’m drawn to that type of scene when I’m taking pics. I know a lot of people just think it’s ugly and that it doesn’t speak highly of the city… I’m not trying to neglect “prettier,” more sanitized areas, I just find it more difficult to take photos that I personally find interesting in clean, newer parts of town. The reason for the disclaimer is that in the past I’ve gotten comments like “too bad the city is covered in graffiti.” It’s not, I just take photos of it.
i have noticd more of those types of shots as of late, though. but, as always, you're work is fantastic. especially put all together. you get to see a different vibe from portland in this thread. man...some of those photos are ooold!
Hillsboro even made this one. Great looking shots & and good canvas from which to practice your art. Where is that alley with the blue murals on either side?

Yup, the Hillsboro shots are from the MAX station a couple blocks from my house. The alley is on Foster between SE 63rd & 64th.
^ I didn't mean to imply that these were dangerous or sketchy areas of town. I guess the thread title was a little misleading. I just meant rough as in not polished. Funny you should mention LA, as I was just there about a month ago.

Cool - these are the kind of pics that people will look back on in 30+ years and say 'thank goodness someone was there to record all the details that aren't there any more'.
Having said that this one did stand out for me because it's so damn perfect.
I, for one, appreciate what you've photographed. They are amazing shots and it shows such a different, but real, side to the city. I can't say how much I appreciate yours, and others, ability to capture people in their day to day lives in the city. Thanks for sharing!
