You are completely over-reacting. This last thing has absolutely nothing to do with Chicago, which is what most of us have been trying to say. He could have built this anywhere else in the entire world outside of China (let's include Hong Kong in that too) and the same thing would have happened. Did you miss the part where he's trying to sell his projects in Los Angeles, London, and Sydney too or did you just hone in on Chicago and assume this is a Chicago problem?

I think I illustrated that I had not missed the part about Wanda selling off its assets abroad when I wrote:
"Shangri-La has no US presence. After the asset sell off neither will Wanda."

I stand by what I said. I am more concerned about possible VE in the current building.

I would like to nicely note that I am from Chicago and hardly assume an adversarial / contrarian position on this board as you may perceive me to. I am a booster of our city - but also am a good ole h'half full' kinda Chicago guy - to avoid disappointment maybe...

China still has people migrating from rural areas to its cities, and transitioning from a subsistence lifestyle to the modern economy. That means that its modern workforce can continue to grow even as its overall population declines.

I also think population decline is going to be less of an economic issue going forward, because robots. It will probably actually be the thing that addresses wealth inequality, because human labor will become more scarce, and therefore more valuable.
Population decline is in a way good, in that it will decrease the insane strain on China's resources and carrying capacity. But the change in demographics of its population will be quite strenuous to its fragile and poorly developed social safety net. There will be too few workers supporting too many retirees.

Automation may help, depending on how future tax structure collects and distributes funds from that new technology. Government tends to lag the market and the tech curve overall, so it will get worse before it begins to get better.

Are you kidding me? The two most luxurious East Asian brands are doing just fine in Chicago. Have you forgotten about the Peninsula and Langham?

Crains is reporting that Wanda is disputing that they are selling their interest in the project.

I mentioned the Peninsula. Forgot about Langham. Still I can't help but feel this is a loss. I sure f*%$n hope they don't change anything. But from the last post maybe its a moot point.

Can we update the Vista pic of building?

Plz, the actual rendering looks nothing like the final version and even the three towers are reversed.

Anyone have a guess of how tall the middle section has to be before they install the south elevators, where that giant hole in the upper deck is? That is if we are still assuming that will be a construction elevator.

And yet Dalian Wanda is saying the news of them wanting to sell a stake in Vista is false..

Well, yeah. The little photo in this thread's title-card thing is a really dated rendering of the tower. What's being built looks pretty different.

New renderings have been released since then. For some reason, the image hasn't been updated.

Title card images cannot be changed without top-level input. . . Mods and Admins have had little success in getting them to make any changes to individual threads. . . it's very unlikely the image will ever be changed. . . that is all. . .

Despite not knowing the reason why, I’ve always liked that the title cards have basically the first iteration of renderings.

^It is kind of cool to see how the design evolves through time. Maybe we could make an album for each major project.
