Beams are the smaller of the horizontal load bearing members, and span between the girders. They support the weight of floor and dead loads/live loads above, and transmit these weight and loads to the girders. Many beams can span between two girders, depending on the weight/load the beams need to carry.
Girders are the larger of the horizontal load bearing members, and span between the load bearing column members. They carry the weight of beams (and the weight of the floors and other dead loads/live loads above) and transmit this weight to the load bearing columns.
Or think of it this way:
Girder = Big horizontal member
Beam = Small horizontal member that is supported by big horizontal member
