Update from June 11th-12th, 2011:

I think I understand now how the aluminum tubing is going to work. At first, I thought it would be really dreadful working on the west side of the floors in the rennovated building, since you would be behind aluminum bars and couldn't see the outside world. It would be like a prison. But seeing the frame, I think that the tubes will arc outward from the cladding in a south to west sweep, leaving just diffuse northern light coming it. In fact, if the inside wall of the tubes are reflective at all, there should still be plenty of natural light getting inside.

If they can pull this off without it looking bizarre then that will be a success of itself.

Glass!

Very exciting news folks, we've got glass! I'll try to get some pics as soon as possible. It's a transparent, greenish glass. Not bad looking, actually.

Glass looks good. After the ugly dark blue glass on First & Main, this will be a welcome breath of light. Dare I say, a chance for Sera to redeem itself after some of their regrettable recent projects in town!

I really love the dark blue glass on First & Main. I think I like this too, but it's hard to tell from such a small sample. One thing is for sure: this will be a radically different building when it's done. Personally, I didn't mind the previous look, but where the building didn't call attention to itself before, it sure will when it's done. Er, redone.

SERA was not the design architect on this project, no matter how many times they MISREPRESENT that little fact. CUTLER was the design architect, and tho they complained, they seem to have little trouble taking credit.

I will wait and see on this one, it could end up pretty bizarre.

Wow, thanks for the info. Good to know.

I think the opaque blue glass is too dark for Portland's climate and has kind of a chintzy 80's feel to it. Just my opinion. But then, I have a permanent chip on my shoulder about Portland's waterfront anyways.

In fairness to the glass. As it has spread, and on a non cloudy morning. The glass is much lighter. I'll try to get pictures sometime next week.
