Government Stimulus Spending in Waterloo Region

MPs bring money to town

Here is a good article from The Record on the various stimulus grants that the municipalities in Waterloo Region recently received. The article focuses on a new professional soccer field to be built at RIM Park, but also mentions that the City of Waterloo may be getting more stimulus money for the water feature and skating rink at the public square.

City receives funding to improve recreational facilities

(Waterloo, ON – June 30, 2009) The City of Waterloo will be able to make needed improvements to some of its recreational facilities thanks to new funding from the provincial and federal governments.

In total, five projects will receive $5.87 million, split equally between the municipal, provincial and federal governments. The shares from the latter two are from the Ontario Recreation Program (REC) and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program in Ontario, both of which aim to create jobs through upgrades and improvements to recreational infrastructure.

"This is wonderful news for the City of Waterloo. This funding from the federal and provincial governments will allow us to make significant repairs to some of our recreational facilities. These improvements will have a lasting impact on this community," said Mayor Brenda Halloran.

At the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, the rubber flooring will be replaced and the pool area will be rehabilitated for $2.2 million. As well, $924,000 will be spent to upgrade its roof and replace the stainless-steel doors.

About $1.1 million has been allocated to making architectural upgrades at the Albert McCormick Community Centre, including replacing windows, retaining walls and sidewalk, resurfacing the parking lot and repairing some exterior brick walls, among other needed work. That community centre will also receive $150,000 to replace its compressors.

Finally, the Moses Springer Community Centre will receive $1.5 million for such architectural and mechanical upgrades as replacing the pool liner and slide, compressor and metal siding. As well, the roof will be restored and the rink board will be replaced.

“Recreational infrastructure strengthens our community physically, socially and economically,” said Peter Braid, MP for Kitchener-Waterloo. “By working in partnership with the government of Ontario and the municipality of Waterloo, we are able to make major investments that will improve recreational facilities in our community, while helping to create jobs and stimulate the economy.”

John Milloy, MPP for Kitchener Centre, added, “Our joint federal-provincial efforts to ensure adequate facilities for sport and recreation are central not only to improving rates of physical activity, but to improving our community’s health. Investing in these essential community facilities will have a great impact on the well-being of families across our region.”

The City of Waterloo has received millions of dollars from the provincial and federal governments this year to improve its roads and to build an outdoor sports facility at RIM Park. The city is still waiting to hear back about other funding applications it has submitted, totaling $3.2 million with the city’s contributions.
