Sault Ste. Marie had it's first homicide of the year on the 14th. The Sault averages around 1 per year so lets hope this is the only one for the city this year.

Last year there were no homicides in the city. Only 1 each in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Gatineau police have confirmed this is a murder. A 21-year-old man is in custody. He is apparently a former employee of a large paving company that was owned by the woman's husband, who died a couple of years ago.

Edmonton is on quite a roll. Suspicious death in a downtown apartment brings the number of murders to five for 2017 so far

Previous one ended up being a murder- suicide

That 5 for Edmonton is the same number as London had all of last year.

After having just visited Quebec City and a number of us discussion how safe it is there, this is awful news:

Multiple dead after shooting at Quebec City mosque, police say
2 suspects have been arrested, according to Quebec City police

Quebec City Police say several people are dead after shots were fired inside a Quebec City mosque on Sunday night.

Multiple people are also feared wounded, according to CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada.

Their condition is not known at this time.

A few dozen people were inside the Islamic cultural centre of Quebec in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood when the shooting began just after 8 p.m.

Quebec City Police Constable Étienne Doyon said mostly men were gathered at the mosque for evening prayers.

The director of the centre said at least five people were killed, but that information has not been confirmed by police.

Two suspects have been arrested.

A large perimeter has been set up around the mosque.

This June, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a pig's head was left on the doorstep of the mosque.

More to come

I suppose I should be the one to do this.

Québec City at 6 for 2017.

Mass shooting with 6 dead (as of the morning of Jan. 30, 2017) and 8 injured some of them very seriously.

I guess that puts Québec City at the top of the Canadian list, for the moment, anyway.

This puts it on par with the mass shooting on Jan. 6 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The shooting at the airport.

Just horrible. I fear that what is happening south of the border is fueling hatred up here.

First one for Ottawa. He was stabbed in a house that's basically the only residential property in that specific area. It's all industrial and commercial around there except for that one house, it seems. When I heard the name of the street and they said "house" I first thought it was a mistake.

Two people (man and woman) were found dead in an apartment in the Val-Tétreau (Hull) district of Gatineau overnight. A three-year-old child was also found but was unharmed.

The building in question was the focus of a big drug bust a few months ago.

No further details yet.

EDIT: Hold on that. No foul play in these deaths, the police have said. It could be a drug overdose of some kind. I should say that the dangerous drugs that are ravaging much of the rest of the continent have recently arrived in our region with a bang.

Two dead in Fort Frances, a Fort Frances man has been charged with two counts of second degree murder:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunde...park-1.4014796

It's an absurd metric because it's a small town but that's a homicide rate of 26/100,000.

Those two deaths were deemed to be not criminal the next day so they don't count.
