My dream light rail and streetcar system for the Phoenix metro area

I have shared this at other forums, however, since I am a new member on this forum, I think this is worth sharing here.

In the Phoenix area, light rail ridership has exceeded expectations. I personally think the system should be expanded in the future. In my dream system, each line would have its own color, with the following:
  • Red Line - Existing route plus north/west extension to Metrocenter Mall and east extension to Power Road and Superstition Springs Center. Serves Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa.
  • Blue Line - Existing route (including Downtown Mesa extension) plus planned Capitol/I-10 West extension and an additional extension west on I-10 and north on Loop 101 to Westgate. Serves Glendale, Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa.
  • Green Line - The planned Tempe Streetcar (http://www.valleymetro.org/projects_and_planning/project_detail/tempe_streetcar/).
  • Silver Line - Baseline and Central Avenue up Central to Indian School Road, east on Indian School Road, north on SR 51, east on Shea Blvd, and north on Tatum to Paradise Valley Mall. Serves Phoenix including the northeastern part of the city.
  • Orange Line - From Arrowhead Towne Center, east on Bell Road, south on 59th Avenue, east on Glendale Avenue, south on Central Avenue, east on Loop 202, south to Sky Harbor Airport, east on Broadway, south on McClintock, and east on Chandler Blvd to Chandler Fashion Center. Serves Glendale, Peoria, Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler.
  • Pink Line - From Chandler Blvd and 48th Street, east on Chandler Blvd/Williams Field Road to Power Road, and north on Power Road to Superstition Springs Center. Serves Phoenix (Ahwatukee), Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa.
  • Brown Line - From Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright south to Chandler Blvd, and east on Chandler Blvd to Chandler Fashion Center. Serves Scottsdale, Tempe, and Chandler.
  • Purple Line - 75th Avenue and Baseline to Power Road via Baseline, and north on Power Road to Superstition Springs Center. Serves Phoenix (Laveen), Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert.
  • Gold Line - Downtown Phoenix from US Airways Center/Chase Field, east via existing alignment, south on Dobson Road, east on Southern Avenue, and south on Gilbert Road to Queen Creek Road. Serves Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler.
For efficient use of rail equipment, Orange Line trains that arriving inbound at Chandler Fashion Center would depart outbound as the Brown Line and vice-versa. Similarly, Pink Line trains arriving inbound at Superstition Springs Center would depart outbound as the Purple Line and vice-versa.

I personally think the Pink, Brown, and Purple Lines could be popular with mall shoppers. The Pink Line would connect Chandler Fashion Center, SanTan Village, and Superstition Springs Center. The Brown Line would connect Scottsdale Fashion Square and Chandler Fashion Center. Finally, the Purple Line would connect Arizona Mills and Superstition Springs Center.

For those who were wondering about the choices of my colors, here are my reasons:
  • The Red, Blue, and Green Lines are named as such as these are actually being planned (plus with my own extensions), and those are typically the first three colors used by most transit agencies.
  • The Brown Line was routed to avoid Hispanic areas to avoid being offensive (The Asian-American communities in Atlanta objected to the Yellow Line which is why it was renamed to the Gold Line).
  • The Pink Line was named as such since it passes mostly through politically conservative areas which likely has a lower than average gay population for the Phoenix area, thus fewer gays would be offended and gay stereotypes would not be promoted.
  • Like with MARTA in Atlanta, I used Gold instead of Yellow, to avoid offending the Asian communities on the Dobson corridor.
  • Silver, Orange, and Purple are completely random choices.
What does anyone think about these lines?

Here are some images that someone drew up for me, courtesy of blanketcomputer of AARoads. However, the Pink Line is partly incorrect as it shouldn't have that north-south segment on 48th Street on the west end of the route. Also, the Green Line is missing the segment to the Tempe Public Library.

Valley-wide (http://i.imgur.com/RGNJbmx.jpg):

Southeast Valley zoomed in (http://i.imgur.com/kkgERQc.jpg):

Northwest Valley zoomed in (http://i.imgur.com/6iJiP2g.jpg):

Also, the Blue Line is supposed to overlap with the Red Line from Downtown Phoenix east to Downtown Mesa, although it doesn't appear that way in the maps.

I think there is more.

The Silver Line will extend light rail from Paradise Valley Mall to Mayo Clinic, Desert Ridge Marketplace, CityNorth and etc.

There are more extensions of the light rail routes:

Red Line will be extend from Metrocenter Mall to ASU West, Grand Canyon Community College.

That is all.

I know many have suggested commuter rail along the BNSF tracks parallel to Grand Avenue, however, just because there are existing tracks for freight trains doesn't mean it is the ideal route for transit purposes in terms of potential ridership.

I would think my light rail routes would probably get more ridership than any commuter rail route that would utilize existing freight train tracks, otherwise there would have to be a lot of right-of-way acquired and tracks layed, which would be very expensive.

Interesting additions.

With your Red Line extension, what do you mean by Grand Canyon Community College? Do you mean Grand Canyon University? That would deviate a bit from the existing route and would have to backtrack to serve Metrocenter.

However, the extension to ASU West seems like a good idea.

I never realized that Phoenix had the built environment and climate for such a broad based rail network.

You sure all of this needs to be served with high cost/high capacity rail?

Phoenix is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the nation, yet its transit network is lacking compared to other metro areas of similar size. I personally think the light rail system should be expanded across the Valley. Note that I am suggesting light rail, rather than even more expensive heavy rail that is typically found in world-class cities such as NYC or Chicago.

Such a network would cost what, $15-20 billion in capital expenses? What's the taxable value of the entire Pheonix tax base? $110 billion or so? That's way out of whack.

Of course, out of all my lines, the Brown Line will probably never happen since the Scottsdale government and residents are opposed to any light rail going through their city. Still, I think such route would have ridership potential; Scottsdale has the fourth highest bus ridership in the Phoenix metro area after Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. The Route 72 along Scottsdale Road is quite a busy route.

Yes, you may be right. It wasn't too busy at all. It wasn't too crowding. They are not interested light rail. They don't want it.

Even though the Brown Line will probably never happen due to opposition from Scottsdale, if it were to happen I would think it would have a lot of support from mall traffic for those who want to go between Scottsdale Fashion Square and Chandler Fashion Center. The same would be true with the Pink Line (Chandler Fashion Center, SanTan Village, and Superstition Springs Center), as well as the Purple Line (Arizona Mills and Superstition Springs Center).

What about Bell Rd from Scottsdale Rd/Frank Lloyd Wright Rd to 83rd Ave? Will they consider it?

Perhaps that could work to connect the Brown and Orange Lines on the north end of the routes, as well as to your Silver Line extension idea.

You're not dreaming big enough, the best of all dreams is to have a light rail station right in front of your yard and front door, regardless of how much it will cost.
Otherwise, let's let the pundits choose where it should go.

Well, some of my routes (Pink and Brown specifically) use corridors that have been identified in the past as high capacity transit corridors. Also, with some routes (in particular the Pink, Brown, and Purple Lines) I factored in the potential mall traffic.

For me, the Pink Line would be the closest to where I live.
