Guess who played Zilker Park Wednesday night at Blues on the Green.

Charlie Sexton, Billy Gibbons and Jimmie Vaughan.

A Stevie Ray Vaughan interview from 1985 where he talks about Austin and Texas and how the city wasn't quite "money" yet and was still about people. The interviewer asks him if he fears it'll get too big.

I tend to just listen to his music whenever I go looking for videos of him, but I do love watching these. I always did get the feeling all of those blues singers were and still are best friends, like they get to share the best job in the world with everyone.

Thanks, Kevin! I watched/listened to all three clips while doing work on the computer. I was lucky enough to see SRV once. Damn, he was good.

I saw him twice on that last tour, once in Dallas and once in Austin.

I have never forgotten when I saw him in Austin, he talked to the audience a little bit about "living on borrowed time" and talking about his mortality. That probably wouldn't have stuck around in my memory except for the fact that several months later he died. So I always remembered.

Because of this thread, I went back and searched for the date of the Austin show... and found a full unedited video on youtube of the show. I heard again, for the first time in 27 years, the words that I had remembered. They begin at 30:00 in the video below:

Plus it's an awesome performance, too. I had forgotten how good it was. Riviera Paradise to open the show was incredible.

Yeah, I have that album with that speech. That concert was 1 day before my 10th birthday. I never saw him live, unfortunately. I don't think my parents were all that much into going to concerts. By time my brother and I started going to concerts, Stevie was long gone, and I didn't really discover his music until I was nearly out of high school. I bought his Greatest Hits 1 album and had been listening to it. My brother had heard a few of his songs on Z102 and remembered I had the album and started listening. I think it was Change It and House is Rockin' that really caught my attention. About 12 years ago, my brother, his future wife and I went up to Dallas to go visit his high school, the house he grew up in, and we even visited his grave.

Cool story. I didn't know that specific performance had been released on an album, thanks for that. I should do a trip like that to Dallas at some point; I did one to Lubbock for the Buddy Holly museum/home and I really enjoyed it.

Truth be told, I wasn't that into SRV at the time, because I really wasn't aware of him. 1989 was my freshman year at UT and my first year in Austin. I actually was going to those shows to see Jeff Beck. But I quickly became an SRV fan after seeing him live. Too bad I never got a chance to see more, but I feel lucky to have seen him live at all.
