Can you imagine Austin having a Pyramid tower as it's tallest?

Something London Shard meets TransAmerica? DISCUSS

If it would look like this beauty they've been planning in Paris, I'd be all in. The problem is, for it to be Austin's tallest, the base would have to be even wider than this one which is only 590' tall, and where is the available land for that? Or you could build a taller narrow version of this.
There's no angle cuts on this, each floor is straight and narrower, so the edges are stair stepped, but the number of floors smooths out the lines, I love this design. Austin would never be the same if the French took back the Statue of Liberty in NY and gave us this instead. Maybe it could go where the AAS is.

[QUOTE=corvairkeith;7511833]You mean like this?

I actually think that's really cool looking! I think it would be neat just as a structure, does not have to be functional, except maybe just to go to the top for observation? But with really cool led lighting, it could be a "famous" landmark? No?

I mean...it would certainly draw attention. Maybe if it had some sweet neon lights.

I though Austin was "special" and wanted to remain "special". Copying what other cities have done will only make Austin "common". I don't want to see pyramids in Austin's landscape.

We already have one building. It's 101 Congress and it's been pictured twice on here. Its not a pyramid in the traditional sense and from certain angles it looks like a thin square tower with rows of neon lights but that's what makes the building interesting to look at. It will always be one of my favorite buildings that we have.

Now if you mean specifically Egyptian style then I'd have to agree with you. I think 101 Congress pays homage to to Central American pryamids which makes sense. I would have liked to have seen the Rainey Street proposal get built but I'm happy with what's going to be built there too albeit more of the same in terms of the typical box or rectangular design that is so common with most of our towers lately.

I would like Austin to acquaint itself with circles, ovals, and generally curved exteriors, rather than anything with hard angles We've got a pretty geometrical skyline, all things considered.

I agree, I was always a fan of curves, ovals ect... such as the Enron bldgs in Houston, though when I look at them now, they look a bit prematurely dated.

PRECISELY! I was looking everywhere for this old thing. Austin's main 'look' was a pyramid with 101 Congress and I'd like to see a 2020's era version of that.

Did anything ever happen with that? I've never heard of it, but it seems like it'd be a great collaboration for MACC and some developer who wants to add units to the area. Interesting that they're so dramatically opposed to development around them, yet this was a proposal (on some level anyway) just seven years ago. It would certainly be interesting over in the Rainey area, but I do like the unique aspect of it, along with the nod to the cultural center at the base and the heritage pre-Columbian peoples throughout Central and South America.

Few concept projects by wanna be architects ever get built. Above all else, there has to be someone, a business or government entity, that wants a building to be built and is willing to pay or find financing for it to be built. That entity has a need that great architects design to meet, because that's the design the entity needing a building will pick. That's basic Economics 101, Supply meeting Demand. Ignore that simple economic fact at your own peril.
