THE SLIDE CONTINUES TO MOVE AND THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX SITUATION; MINISTER FARNWORTH

By Adam Reaburn - October 10, 2018

Minister Farnworth shows local media more about the slide.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth visited Fort St. John and Old Fort Landslide Wednesday and continued to stress this is a very complex situation.

The Minister flew over the slide Wednesday afternoon and since Tuesday, the slide has moved another 20 metres into the Peace River and the cracks on either side of the slide are still widening.

Emergency Management B.C. now has a regional manager in the community working directly with the PRRD along with a communications person. Additional lidar mapping has been put into place to help geologists determine how the slide is moving.

PEACE RIVER REGIONAL DISTRICT ISSUES EVACUATION ORDER FOR ALL OF THE OLD FORT
ByAdam Reaburn -October 7, 2018

UPDATE as of 2 p.m. – The Peace River Regional District has posted the following statement about why the order was issued to evacuate the Old Fort

“Based on the initial review by the engineering geologist retained by the PRRD, the continued movement of the main and re-activated slides pose a significant risk to public safety resulting in a recommendation for the previous evacuation orders. Information collected during the helicopter survey of the area and ground truthing showed evidence of stress cracks and other signs of instability throughout the area west of the main slide, and upslope of Old Fort Road on the east side of the main slide. As per the announcement Saturday evening, access for utility crews has been impacted and it is not considered safe for them to continue work at this point in time. Limitations for visibility and LiDAR survey to monitor changes in the movement of the slide have been reduced with the current snowfall conditions. Visual and recorded observations of movement to date indicate the movement is significant and unpredictable.”

CITY OF FORT ST JOHN ISSUES EVACUATION ALERT

By Adam Reaburn - October 10, 2018

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has issued an evacuation alert for part of the City above the Old Fort Landslide.

At 16:30 hours on October 10, 2018, the City of Fort St. John issued an Evacuation Alert for the southern-most section of the City’s South Sewage Lagoons. There are no residential properties in the identified area; the Evacuation Alert was issued as a precautionary measure due to the proximity of the area to the Peace River Regional District Evacuation Orders. This will allow the City of Fort St. John to effectively respond if required.

PRRD EXPANDS LANDSLIDE EVACUATION ORDER TO ISLANDS SOUTH OF OLD FORT

By Chris Newton - October 11, 2018

This map shows all the properties that have been evacuated after the landslide.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Peace River Regional District has once again expanded the area under an evacuation order because of the landslide near the community of Old Fort, though this time the order is for areas south of the community.

The PRRD said that the expansion of the evacuation order to include the islands south of Old Fort was recommended by Westrek Geotechnical Services, the firm contracted by the Regional District after the landslide first began on September 30th.

The main slide is said to have already impacted one of the islands, and recent changes along with new information about the west slide indicate the potential for increased mobilization and depth of failure.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - Most residents of a northeastern British Columbia community threatened by a slowly moving landslide are still waiting to find out when they can return home, but a handful have received positive news.

More than 50 properties in Old Fort, just south of Fort St. John, were ordered evacuated Oct. 7, one week after a steep hillside above the homes had begun to slump, which ripped out the only road and cut power.

The Peace River Regional District has lifted an evacuation order covering one home near the hilltop, and alerts have been entirely rescinded for 12 other properties along two edges.
